5 years I've been suffering from Fall allergies In Kunming... but, strangely, none this year because I changed 2 things in my normal routine....well, maybe. I started running more often and stopped drinking beer. Honestly, I was desperate the itching and sneezing was so bad. Sobriety and increased intake of the offending allergen did the trick. Weird. Dang, I miss beer!!
Huge amount of police, ChenGuan, and SWAT-team cops on the corner of ZhengYi Lu and RenMin lu this morning. Also, tons of plain-clothes gov't types scanning the populace for dangerous elements. My bag of papers to grade was heavily scrutinized. The SWAT team has set up camp right in front of Alei.

This tiny little shop hidden in the little streets adjacent to Kundu has the best MiGan (米干) if not the only MiGan in Kunming. Its basically a Dai style fetuccini-width rice noodle that is either fried or served in a soup. I highly recommend it to those who turn their noses up (like me!) at MiXian. The owners are super friendly and one plate of the delicious fried version holds me over most of the day.
Hey everyone. Look at the left sidebar at the top of GK and rarely do you NOT see the Mask having an event of some kind. Taste is taste and you may or may not like whatever events they have, but they ALWAYS give it a shot and they work hard to bring quality entertainment to the KM public...even for those of you who stand outside with your 3 Yuan Dali beers purchased at the little shop next door. Live music is hard to come by in the summer because many local musicians are travelling or touring. Why kill the bar with one or two stars when you can simply walk up to the bartender and ask if they could play something else? The thoughtless flaming of local businesses on gokunming has gotten out of hand. If a place is not to your taste, and all you wasted was the price of one drink and 30 minutes, there is no reason to jump immediately onto your computer to vilify the joint.
Keep up the good work, Mask...
My wife and a good friend of mine ate there last weekend during the "all you can eat bbq" and it was really nice. The home cooking style of everything was really great and the duck was quite tasty. Sandra chatted with us for quite a while and I really appreciated the attention she gave to the food, to her place and to us customers. She let us take home leftovers which is not exactly common on an all-you-can-eat night. Many thanks for a really nice evening.
Thought I'd chime in on this one after having an extensive relationship with this hospital.
Fall of 2008, I manifested symptoms of Deep Vein Thrombosis. I knew what it was because my dad had had it and told me all about what symptoms to look for. I knew exactly how to find the problem and told the physicians at Kunming Hospital #1 to do the tests. They did not find the problem, even though I told them how and where to look. Distraught, I went to Richland where they promptly found the problem, showed me the results, and insisted on immediate treatment. Throughout the procedure, I got the feeling that I was their first case of DVT and that they were checking medical journals every step of the way. Treatment was successful. The private room I stayed in was super clean and I was treated with courtesy, if not curiosity. The entirety of my in-hospital stay cost me 20,000 yuan. For my father, who had similar treatment in the U.S., the cost was 25,000 dollars.
In an emergency situation, there is no way I would recommend this hospital in that it seems to be run by a lethargic monolingual skeleton crew that takes weekends off. If you know what you have and you want a clean place to be treated, I think its a good spot. One final "however"...read this article just as a reminder that you're in Kunming, where healthcare has LONG way to go.
