Metro Line 5 connects Kunming's top attractions

By in News on

Today at 11am Line 5 of the Kunming metro system officially went into operation.
Following the completion of of metro lines 4 and 6 in October of 2020, Line 5 is the latest addition to an ever growing subway network in the Spring City.

Line 5 is connecting some of Kunming's key destinations that were previously left out of the reach of the city's underground railway system. Starting at the Expo Garden in the northeast of Kunming, it consists of 22 stations running over 26.45 kilometers, finally connecting Dianchi International Convention and Exhibition Center and Baofeng Station at the end of the ride. Line 5 also interchanges with lines 2 and 4 at North Railway Station, and Line 3 at Wuyi Lu Station.

The brand new metro line stands out among others as it connects some of Kunming's top attractions, including Expo Park, Green Lake park, Dianchi Lake, Yunnan Nationalities Village, Yunnan Military Academy, Yunnan Railway Museum and other cultural landmarks.

Extended sections of the existing Line 1 and Line 2 are still under construction and currently don't have an official opening date. Instead, they connect with each other at the Kunming Train Station, linking the North Bus Station with University Town in Kunming's far south.

Tickets and pricing

Same as other lines, the easiest way to get quick access to Kunming's metro system is by enabling the subway (地铁) card inside of Alipay's transport section, or by finding the WeChat mini-app 乘车码.

Subway rides are currently priced at 2 yuan up to 4 kilometers, 3 yuan up to 5 kilometers, 4 yuan up to 7 kilometers, 5 yuan up to 9 kilometers, 6 yuan up to 11 kilometers and 7 yuan up to 13 kilometers, and 8 yuan to distance exceeding 13 kilometers.

How do you use the 乘车码 app on Wechat? It has never accepted my passport number as verification. I'm on Android. I just use Alipay, but I am still curious.

Would be nice to see a map we actually can read ;-)

Yes. A schematic map is only useful to find your way on the system that is mapped. For most tourists and strangers to the system, a map that relates to what is on the ground (above) is much more useful.

I could be mistaken but the I thought that the metro lines used to be shown on Googlemaps. But not any more apparently.

It's available on amap 高德地图. Should also soon be available on Metroman since they seem to use amap for their maps.

I was referring to the map above which is to small to be of practical use.

Because of the Metro Line 5 opening in our area, we have just gained another 3 bus services in our area. We live in a area a little off the beaten track, before we only had one bus.
It may be worth regular commuters, who live near line 5, checking to see if they have picked up any new bus routes.

Kunming gets better and better, don't you think? It amazes me how far it has come in just a few years.

Can the map image be posted in better resolution, perhaps downloadable? As others have said this version is useless even when zoomed in.
