Wildlife You've Seen in Yunnan

I guess we should include the Siberian gulls that visit Kunming. That is an actual wildlife migration.

Never seen a city pigeon walking on Kunming streets, must get caught and cooked quick.

It's really lacking compared to every other country I've been to. I've seen a squirrel deep in the forest, a dead snake near Fuxian Lake, Pigeons flying in flocks around my apartment, A few other species of birds, sparrows have made a good population comeback since the C.R. Most dogs/cats on the streets are alert and not willing to socialise with humans. As soon as I landed in Hong Kong a friendly neighbourhood cat approached me and I patted it, wow not possible in Kunming..

@Marko: I don't know of city pigeons being caught and cooked in Kunming, though it might be done occasionally by the very poor - do you?

Napoleon (1183 posts) • -1

@Marko21

Rock pigeons (city pigeons) aren't native to China - and that will be why you don't see them.

Bit like saying "I haven't seen any hippopotamus in Kunming"

We are in a big city here, wildlife will always be limited. I'm sure straying outside of city limits you'll get plenty more.

AlexN (8 posts) • +1

@Napoleon
I have seen over 150 different species of bird within Kunming city limits.

I am a pretty avid birder but even for more casual nature watchers I would say there's at least 30-40 species of bird you can reliably find in the city at any time of the year.

That number goes up significantly during Spring and Fall migration.

There are more kinds of wild animals in the city than most would imagine (that includes me before I got into birding).

I see many city pigeons flying around, they are there and occasionally get caught in traps of rooftops or by other means, but the city pigeons in Kunming have fear of being on the ground as I've seen many in the air but none on the ground, They do get caught and sold at the markets as I've seen, I'm sure that people don't keep them as pets or use them as messengers. Anyway most cities have a problem with pigeon control so Kunming is doing a good job of keeping the pigeon populations low.
