I've lived in many cities in China. But not until I came to Kunming have I come across so many rich Chinese. Not a day goes by when I don't see a Lamborghini, a Rolls Royce, a Maybach, Bentley or a Ferrari around my neighborhood.

I've been here for 6 years and never seen a Ferrari. Lots of Lamborghinis though. Kunming has what is probably the largest Bentley dealership on the planet.
They're here because now that we have 'market socialism', people who work very hard are rewarded and get to have cars that are more expensive than other people's lives - just like with capitalism!
Lots of savvy businessmen and 富二代.
@Napoleon: yeah, I was being satirical with the 'work very hard': lots of people work hard.
@alien
Market socialism? Like Germany, Sweden, France, England etc.?
Wow, I didn't know it arrived, already?
A lot more poor Chinese here too, so wealth was really concentrated. Also, the elite of tier1 buy Teslas or Mercedes. They have moved past conspicuous consumption in cars anyways. For Kunming, I'd say if your not in Guandu or Dianchi area, you're unlikely to see those cars.
'Market socialism' is the usual Party/government English translation of what is going on here. Doubt if you can find it in use in Europe.
And all those luxury cars are covered in layers of dust and navigate down pot hole ridden streets careful not to run over a chicken in its path. It is a type of wealth that signifies the gaps in a culture. People in nice cars here are known to get out and beat people on bicycles who have the audacity to be on their way. Vast wealth and yet China ranks towards the bottom of the list in the world for charity work and social programs and services. A Bently in an affluent district of London signifies a cultured disposition and old money and wealth. Here it is just new money showing off and saying " I am better than you and get out of my way."
A bit of an exaggeration Emile. Give it time. China can't have old money without new money first.
