Forums > Living in Kunming > HELP! SET UP for Apple Airport Base Station

On the ADSL line. You need a splitter. The wire from the wall goes in one end and there are two jacks on the other. One goes to your phone and the other to your ADSL modem (it has lights that flash and it needs a power source). My ADSL will not work unless the phone is plugged in.

You connect the modem to the router WAN jack. So it is wall to splitter to modem to router. You gotta have it in the right order and also have your phone plugged in as well.

Dude, I setup my WI-FI this week. My Chinese is really limited. Here's how I did it:

1. Brought my laptop, Kindle and Anroid phone with me when I bought the router.

2. Had the guy that sold me the router setup my SSID (name of the router) and put in the key (password) for me.

3. He then connected the devices except there was a problem with the Kindle.

4. Took everything home and physically connected everything. Used this sources to help through this part.

Micro soft: www.microsoft.com/[...]

5. I think you ran into the all Chinese when you went to 192.168.1.whatever. I knew somewhere I had to enter my username and password for my ADSL account.

I went through menu until I thought I found the right page, then entered both.

6. Then I tried to connect the router to the ADSL. It didn't seem to work. After a couple of hours and a growing sense of frustration I noticed a WI-FI icon in the tray next to the clock. WTF??? I opened my browser and I was connected.

No where does anyone say the router automatically logs in to the ADSL ISP. In fact, best I can tell, if the router is on and you boot up your computer, you are logged into the ISP.

7. I turned on my phone and it works! I played with the Kindle but it kept telling me the password was incorrect. All works well now. Next I get a tablet!

8. Kindle: I left the Kindle charging and the WI-FI turned on and went to bed. In the morning I found the Kindle had changed it's mind, was connected and had downloaded a couple of things. Since then the Kindle sometimes says it is connected but the download page tells me I need a connection(???). I just leave it with the WI-FI on and charging and the Kindle sorts it out, albeit mysteriously.

Hope you got some clues

I bought a notebook in 2010 in Kunming. I had my real and legal English WIN XP installed after formatting the HD. But that was the easy part.

It took a more trips back to the store to find, download, and change most of the drivers to the English versions. Finally, it was sorted out.

Lately, the notebook has begun to display error messages in Simplified Chinese. There is very little Chinese software on the machine, just some dictionaries and QQ.

I have an original, legal OFFICE 2007 as well, Unfortunately, Excel has taken on some Chinese characteristics.

Microsoft products are "localized." I am not sure what all is involved but it is not simply GUI in another language. Access in English is not compatible with the localized Chinese version. Certain common tasks in English Excel have been modified to fit the way Chinese use spreadsheets. Trust me, teaching Access and Excel to Chinese students requires you to have both a high level of Chinese skill and the localized versions installed. Otherwise, the neat stuff you do at home, handouts, samples and planned lectures, just won't work on the school's computers.

Computers are cheaper in the US. Chinese like to buy cheap so they usually buy little more than bare bones configurations. I like lots of HD and RAM. Upgrading locally will drive the price way above stateside prices. My locally bought notebook, with a 4GB DIY RAM upgrade was significantly more expensive than the same model with 4GB RAM and a bigger HD in the US. Deciding factor: the cost of shipping.

Good for quality, but pricey, hand tools.

Be aware they will push whatever they are selling. Some of the staff have no idea about the technical side of appliances.

I went there to buy a stove. I repeatedly told them I would be using bottled gas. They sold me a stove. When I went to my local gas guy, I learned there are at least three kinds of gas sold. Luckily, B&Q did not deliver as promised. I went back to the store and discovered they had sold me a stove they needed to be hooked up to the gas main. I got my money back.

The sales lady was almost in tears, 没有问题!I don't know if it a safety or design issue, but I would think B&Q would know and care.

Last week had an 8:45am flight.

Subway starts at 9am. I have no idea where to catch an airport express bus. Eight taxis refused to go to the airport. After almost an hour standing on Beijing Lu took a black taxi, this dude drives slower than my mother, 120 yuan.

Flight back was delayed so I learned the subway stops running at 6:10pm.

Getting a taxi back was easy, more taxis than customers. Taxi was 87 yuan including 1o yuan toll, airport to Beichen area. Yes, he took a longer route than necessary.

Kunming imagines being a gateway for international travelers. New airport but hard to get to and from it.

World Class Airport, NOT!

Tonight "Peacock", a performance by Yang Liping (杨丽萍), to begin her world tour, 8pm, 100-1680 yuan at Yunna Haigeng Auditorium.

Saw this lady perform at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, in California, in 1995. Quite a good and interesting show.

I'm going to try to make it.

Not so good. Kimchi had a very sour taste. Other food was nothing to brag about. I don't think I would go back.
