Forums > Living in Kunming > ATMs and banks closed near NanYa

My wife just called saying all the ATMs were closed at NanYa shopping center. There was a sign on the door, but she couldn't read it. So she decided to walk down Fu Jing Road to the bank. When she got there, it was closed, as well as the ATM, and police were standing outside.

On sweater street and Wu Yi Liu there is a store called Green Tree (I think). Anyways, the store front is green, and I believe there is a tree on the sign. I think these stores get name brand irregular items from factors and sell them at a discounted price. I am a big guy myself, and I have been able to find many nice shirts, sweaters and pants. Also, the price is very reasonable. I would go to these places first.

Forums > Food & Drink > Papa Johns Pizza

@goldie. You are correct about two things—zhudan is being a jerk, and Papa Johns does have a Monday special.

Every Monday, you can buy medium, original crust pizzas for half price. I think regular price is around 90RMB, so you can get one for 45RMB.

They will even deliver the pizza to you. The number is 400-888-7272. When the answering service picks up select 2 then 1 for English. Be sure you know the exact name of the pizza you want, or the person on the phone won't be able to figure out what you want. Hope that helps.

Forums > Living in Kunming > What is the pay for modeling?

@ AlexKMG, the other foreign co-worker didn't get paid either. She is new to China, and she thought it would take an hour or less.

Our Chinese co-worker told her it wouldn't be long, and it was to help out a friend. She offered the other foreign co-worker free pictures of her child.

As I mentioned, my foreign co-worker did not call me. My daughter came in from playing while we were cooking lunch and asked if she could go take some pictures with our neighbor/foreign co-worker. I had no idea this was a modeling shoot and I had no idea it would be nearly 4 hours before she got back.

Forums > Living in Kunming > What is the pay for modeling?

This weekend, my 7 year old daughter came in and asked if she could go with a foreign co-worker to take pictures. Being busy and stupid, I didn't ask where. I thought this other mother was just taking pictures around our xiaoqu, but that was not the case.

A Chinese co-worker had asked this my other co-worker to bring her children and other foreign children for a photo shoot.

The shoot lasted over 3 hours, and they took hundreds of photos. I got worried when she she wasn't home after a few hours, so I called my co-worker, and she explained that they were at a photo shoot.

Anyways, when my daughter got home, I asked if she got paid. She said, "no". Then I asked if anyone got paid. She told me she saw my Chinese co-worker get paid from lady fixing hair.

The next day, I approached them saying my daughter saw her get paid. She adamantly denied getting paid. I also told her that if she got paid, she had taken advantage of my child. She said she was simply helping a friend.

However, when I asked my daughter if she was sure she got paid, she was adamant that she did get paid, and she even gave a very specific timeline of when the pay took place and that it was a stack of hundreds with a band around it. I've asked her several more times, and her story has never changed.

Today, the Chinese co-worker came to me all pissed off. She was furious that I believed my daughter over her, and she said she would never take advantage of a child.

I told her if she didn't take advantage of my child then someone did, and they need to pay her. I asked if she would expect her child to work nearly 4 hours for free, and she said no. Anyways, the co-worker asked what I wanted. I said I thought it should be worth at least 500RMB, but I think this might even be too little.

Can anyone give me any advice on this situation? I know I made this person lose face, but I think what she did was wrong.

@Encrypted "Healthiest in the world" please give me a break. I won't argue with you that BK is unhealthy because it is, but it isn't any less unhealthy as smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day while eating pieces of pig fat swimming in pig lard. China has one of the highest rates of heart disease in the world, and it has nothing at all to do with BK.

As I consider the increase of diabetes in China there is only one clear reason. If fast food was the culprit, the USA would certainly have more than 11.6% of its population diagnosed with diabetes. More and more Chinese are eating KFC, Pizza Hut, and McDonalds; however, the amount of people consuming food from these establishments is still a very small percent compared to the entire population. Therefore, you can probably blame some of the obesity problem on these joints; however, you can't blame the rapid increase of diabetes on them.

Instead, it is clear to me that alcohol a tobacco use is the clear reason there has been a rapid increase of diabetes in China. China has more smokers than any other country in the world—by a long shot. Americans eat way more fast food than Chinese, but tobacco in the USA is a fragment of what is used in China. Unlike those who consume fast food in China, citizens from all socioeconomic statuses smoke in China. Smoking is the common link.

My wife and I have been a to Magiano's twice in the past few months, and we have been super pleased both times.

Last night, we ordered pizza (it came with freshly graded parmesan cheese), pasta, & a risotto dish. All three were excellent. Besides great food, we were served freshly baked bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for free. To top it off, the owner brought us a small piece of American ribeye to taste for free.

The wait staff was very attentive, and every time my water glass was empty, they were over to our table in just a few seconds to fill it.

We were able to eat for a little more than 200rmb. This might sound expensive to some; however, I thought it was a great deal considering we got bread and three dishes. We will certainly be giving them our business again.

I am not familiar with Hongshan Dong Lu. What area of town is this, and what is it near.

My wife and I would love to come try your restaurant.
