English non-native teachers

jitkah (8 posts) • 0

Hi All,

I was just wondering if anybody works around teaching English in Yunnan. I have heard that there are apparently new rules for being able to teach English in China as a non native speaker. I was just allocated a job in Yuxi but have recently seen some people saying that I won't be able to get working Z visa as the law has changed. Any advice where to get info would be much appreciated.

Same rules, just sounds like they're getting harder to dodge. That's the way I seem to read it on here as don't teach.

It's still possible.
Perhaps you attended university in an English speaking country.

Perhaps you have a very high distinction in English language teaching (DELTA)

Perhaps you have a certificate to teach your native language, which the school can work in your favour.

Perhaps you already have a FEC and this can be extended by the new company.

Failing all that it's not a large city, leave it in the schools hands.

Interesting article published 2016-04 - New policy to block many (non-native) English speakers from legally teaching the language (English) in China.

In a bid to improve the quality of English language education in the country, the Chinese government has raised the bar for foreigners hoping to gain employment teaching the language.

Foreigners from non-native English speaking countries can no longer teach English in China at ANY level unless they have a bachelor degree or above from an English-speaking country.

I was not aware this was taking place. Competition!!!

i guess this will mean more people working illegally. this is what seemed to happen after last tightening of rules. and poor enforcement .like war on drugs it don't seem to work. result will not be more pay for teachers

However, they will continue to allow Chinese teachers here, most of whom do not have a hold of the language, to teach English.

In one school I taught at, my son had a Chinese grammar teacher for English grammar. I think teaching grammar can be difficult even for a native speaker. He would regularly come home with things marked wrong in his notebook that were correct. I could hardly understand her when she spoke.

@goldie

Of course they will continue to have Chinese teachers of English here. Why wouldn't they?

How are the standards going to change if they are not in the classroom? How are level 0 students going to begin to learn? How are grammar points going to be given to people with little in the way of English skills? Are the foreign teachers going to take up the Chinese teacher's working week, go to undesirable areas to teach students?

How is it that you learnt language in school? from primary school to high school did you have a French man who couldn't speak English in the class with you? If you did, how's your French?

How are exam skills to be presented to students? Native speakers have never taken an IELTS exam and a large portion for IELTS teachers just teach high level English, with not much idea of the exam skills necessary. Chinese teachers are able to fill in those gaps, provided they are suitably qualified.

I agree. Many Chinese teachers can teach English grammar, writing, and listening but very few can really teach proper English pronunciation whether it's American, British or other English speaking country accent. I think it's better to be exposed to English at an early age whether it's from a Native or non-native speaker. Eventually if the student has a keen interest in really learning, they will develop that skill.

Some good points. But there are no standards for a Chinese teacher to teach English. It cannot be taught as they teach Chinese since children have not been listening to it everyday of their lives.

This is one of the reasons Chinese students cannot speak English. They learn for years with poor teachers who try to teach writing before they can speak sentences and teach reading before they understand phonics and many just teach to tests.
