"nonnononono. i don't wanna go TO yuxi,

i just wanna get AWAY from yuxi.". alright, calm down, no need to be rude. maybe asking if the trains "are still running between yuxi and kunming" would have clarified your direction of travel. or maybe just explaining that you planned to finish a long cycle trip by lolling around on a train.

"if no train, then i must cycle uphill. likely with headwind. and rain."

errr, if it's a headwind when you're riding south, i think that would make it a tailwind when you're riding north...?

yes, it is uphill, but it's steady, and you'll have seen worse if you're riding from thailand. the traffic's not that bad, and you likely won't encounter much trouble until you reach Kunming proper. i'd suggest you ride it out. should you still want to cheat, i'd say the bus is the way to go - they have luggage space underneath that can take a bike.

rain... yeah, it's the rainy season. haven't seen much rain lately though.

Kunming has a newish hash - it's done 3 trails, the last of which was run two weekends ago. it was great fun. the event was announced on GoKunming, so i guess the best plan is to keep an eye out here in case more runs are planned.

pretty sure there are no trains to Yuxi. www.tielu.org agrees with this.

there are buses that take about an hour. given all the changes with the bus stations that happened a few months back, i'm unsure which bus station currently serves Yuxi, maybe someone else can chip in.

if you're into cycling, you can ride to Yuxi - it's around 85km. head down the west side of Dianchi and keep going :) it's downhill, but you'll often catch a headwind.

"while praying they retain their own character and culture"

Their own culture? I think not. I think aspects of their own culture were supplanted by 'helpful' Christian missionaries.

On a less angry-about-how-Christianity-homogenised-the-world-with-the-aid-of-fairy-stories note, if teach => taught, why not preach => praught?

possible. go all the way through the gorge in one day, sleep in Daju. your cut off will be the ferry - so nail the operating times of that in advance. you might need your running shoes.

i'm no expert photographer, but i was taught to keep my horizontals horizontal... that photo, presumably an official one, makes me feel like i'm already in a plane.

no-one's reviewed this place for nearly 3 years! i think i know why: it's solid. a bit boring maybe, but they get the job done: food on the table in good time, attentive staff, wide selection of items. the 'Prague Breakfast' is a fine feed, still good value after the recent price increase.

i joined friends here on the weekend. they were getting food and playing a game. the pizzas looked great, but my friends advised me to avoid them, saying they tasted bland.

having made a selection, it took 20 minutes for the staff to tell me that my choice was no longer available. as my friends had nearly finished their game, we then all took our business elsewhere.

helpful advice:

- if someone arrives, give them a menu

- sort out the beer selection

- if i speak to you in Chinese, speak back to me in Chinese

i've recently rediscovered this place. it's a little hit and miss, but i have to say that with a little experimentation, you can find some quality food here. while not perfect, the vindaloo is the best i've had.

i first sampled the Silver Spoon burgers a few weeks back - not bad at all, though i was unconvinced that they were 1/2 pound. another visit yesterday, and this time i was persuaded... definitely a fat burger. i was very happy with my cheese and bacon burger. diners with large appetites, be warned - you'll need a side of something to make a meal - the burger is just a burger - no fries.
