Does DELTA help in China? How much?

GlennTheFrog (4 posts) • 0

I'm sniffing around for university work, teaching English in Kunming.

Do you think my Cambridge DELTA will matter much or help me negotiate a better salary?

Would also be very grateful for any contacts at said universities. On WeChat: GlennTheFrog.

A Degree is a necessity. A Masters usually gets you a better salary. But CELTA v DELTA isn't normally important (in my experience).

It's also worth mentioning that (public) university salaries are fixed in theory and are set by the government. You MAY be able to negotiate your working times, holidays or bonuses but they are rarely willing to negotiate regarding the salary.

no advantage in china that i can see. for a little bit extra work a masters in applied linguistics would be more attracrive in the international schools. also any masters should alloe the uni to pay you in a higher pay band, but probably only an extra 500-1000 per monty

It may get you on a foundation programme but you may be better dropping a CV into someone like New Oriental who have NCUK.

While I'm sure a DELTA would make the difference in getting a job I don't think it will make any difference in the pay. Most schools won't even know what a DELTA is, plus as its a diploma all it will be is extra expense when you authenticate it foe your visa.

You could also try finding out if you could work directly for the MOE - JiaoYuJu. They've been mentioning expanding the positions here for the last few years. Especially if you have some tricks up your sleeve that can get foreign universities/qualifications in or Chinese students out.

I know how hard DELTAS come and you clearly know your stuff in getting one. Unfortunately, I don't think its going to impress people as it should here, they just won't appreciate its worth or be willing to pay for it.
