Forums > Living in Kunming > Kunming sucks the life out of me...

@123
The fairest this to say is that Kunming is not your cup of tea.
To say 'Kunming Sucks' is very subjective.

I have been to many cities and stayed in very 'sucky' hotels, and had a bad day. Every other little irritation then got magnified.

Personally, I prefer Kunming to Beijing; but that is my personal preference. However, each time I visit Beijing I find some other new and pleasant aspect of life in the capital. Perhaps you could give Kunming more of a chance, and remember New York is not Alabama.

They are all very clearly linked.
No matter what you think of market forces (personally I think they are potentially very damaging), they are a very clear factor in this case.

Competitive wages are a fact. Recently we have we seen English teachers advertising at 80rmb/h or less.
The growth of the market is a fact. This has led to more new private sector schools, increasing competition. This has also led to marketing to lower income families, who can/will not pay premium prices.

I don't know if it has started to happen in Kunming yet, but in Shanghai and other cities (mature markets) many private sector schools have gone bust.

On a more personal note.
To start a post talking about "respect", go on to tell people that they "fail to read and comprehend", and close with "The End. (Again)"; is incongruous and potentially offensive.

@BBinKMG
When you sell you will also provide 2 receipts, as the buyer will pay the tax, and will want to reduce his/her costs.

When I say that the buyer will pay the tax, this is not a legal requirement. When people sell in the Kunming market the seller specifies the net amount that they require from the sale, meaning that the buyer picks up the seller's tax burden. This is also a norm in this market.

@mike4g_air floated the idea of a co-op workshop.

I will be returning to Kunming in the Autumn.
I have space, some tools, a vehicle (for lumber) and lots of time. Not interested in running a co-op but I am interested in sharing resources and skills.

If you have skills, experience, tools, books, plans, or something else to add to the pot, I would like to hear from you. Please contact me by PM.

It will probably live much longer than its peers, which will end up in the soup.
As the goat seems to be supporting itself and getting around on two legs, there would be little need for the support wheels.

In the outlying areas of Kunming, Guandu and southwards, and out to the airport,elevated tracks have been used.Elevated tracks have been used, but if you already have a developed city then tearing down existing buildings, in many areas, can be controversial and expensive. If you go underneath you leave intact the destinations that people want to travel to.

A reasonable choice of lumber that has improved over time. Fancy hardwoods like walnut, and mahogany are in abundance. There are some plywood and rubber-wood boards available. There are also some kiln dried imported softwoods and merbao available. Some of the lumber is very green, so look for the kiln dried if you need stable timbers.

Echo everything said by others.
Breakfast great and the serve from 8am. Most other places say 9am and they still are not ready.
Sandwiches are cheap 22-32, and really packed full of filling. We got some sandwiches for a day out, the only mistake I made was ordering two, as this was too much. These are seriously good sangars, and they are wrapped in alu foil.

In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.

They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.

They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.
