I think Socialism and Marxism may well be very much religions to many. The DPRK, Cuba and China are founded on Marxist-leninist principles and I agree that many things in these countries have not worked, and that some have (but don't push me to find one vis-a-vis the DPRK). But this has nothing to do with Marx's analysis of how capitalism does or doesn't work. How do you think the capitalist gets rich?

@Geezer: wise words from the Buddha.
'HInduism' is a mass of beliefs and practices that are sometimes contradictory at many levels and are interpreted differently by different batches of people, it's not a single doctrine - it's another word with a somewhat vague. Probably would be better to say that there is at least one school of Indian metaphysicians who have developed the atheist concept. Popularly, people worship their selection of about a million gods - but even then I have met worshippers of Shiva who were free to state that, finally speaking, there are no gods - the gods are personified aspects of Reality.

@Geezer: I agree with what you have written, but only as long as you confine 'Buddhism' to the 'purist teachings' rather than consider the actual social practices that are carried out and the very widespread and varied popular beliefs that go with them. Same is of course true of other religions - e.g., was the Inquisition 'Christianity'?

I think the terms 'God', and especially 'exist', are quite vague and need to be specified carefully before any 'proofs' are attempted, and until they are agreed upon the discussion will probably just be people talking past each other.

Social cooperation is also hard-wired into the individuals of an innately social species such as ourselves, without which the individuals of our species would not have survived to pass on any genes..Rouseau's 'noble savage' never existed, both he and Hobbes were wrong.

There are economic issues concerning education in China for very poor communities, which obviously need a bigger share of the economic pie than they are getting. Yet China's 'socialist market economy' is increasing the overall level of economic resources within China.

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.

Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
