@ Kernalpanx says "as a atheist I believe we should treat others the way we want/expect to be treated." This is often referred to as the Golden Rule. You can find it in the bible, but then Buddha also taught it.
Buddha, a teacher not a god, lived 500 years before Christ. Yet, both teach many similar ideas:
Do to others as you would have them do to you. — LUKE 6.31
Consider others as yourself. —
DHAMMAPADA 10.1
Also:
If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also. —
LUKE 6.29
If anyone should give you a blow with his hand, with a stick, or with a knife, you should abandon any desires and utter no evil words. —
Today we are appalled by fundamental Muslims who behead infidels.
Four hundred years ago, "real" Christians were merrily burning "not real" Christians at the stake for being heretics.
Did the word of the Christian God change? Could it be a change in Christian morals/ethnics occurred?
Missionaries begin friendly, all smiles, offering fellowship, kind words, all to lure heretics or non-believers into buying a coda which provides an illogical bliss and happiness to those that follow the "real" path. Once a missionary realizes he has failed to convert, the friendship disappears and the non-believer becomes invisible.
This is when I fear the Christian is looking for a stake and some kindling rather than caring about my soul.
@Alien: I have had experiences similar to nnoble's over the years. As I do have a belief/faith/religion I have no use for Christianity. I have, in China, from time to time, been beset by various Christians, of several different sects, proselytizing their particular flavor of God's word. Usually, these followers of Christ attempt to sell their wares by disparaging other Christians as "not real Christians." The completion amongst these thumpers (as in bible thumpers) is one of primary reasons I have no interest in Christianity.
On point: I would advise anyone bothered by illegal proselytizing to shut up, smile and bear it.
Proselytizing is illegal in China. Every teaching contract I had in China required that I do not proselytize. Yet this activity occurred openly or discretely at most schools were I taught.
At two schools, the obnoxious, persistent and unceasing pressure by thumpers was unbearable despite my insistence I was not interested and my warning that I was losing my sense of humor and would become nasty. Eventually, I did become quite nasty.
How could this happen? At state schools those persons involved in handling, hiring and controlling foreign teachers are Party members. Party members are not allowed to be Christians. Yet, at both schools the thumpers lodged grievances against me for my anti-Christian utterances. At both schools m contract was not renewed. However, the thumpers' contracts and activities continued for years.
I think the school officials involved were in the closet Christians. The meetings, bible studies and "let's go to church" stuff was just too open. Students seem to think all Westerners were Christian, or, their God forbid, Jewish.
The thumpers you see can be real pains in the ass and tolerated but the hidden thumpers will get you.
@Liumingke1234: Unfortunately, banned dogs are banned. In the past banned dogs have been clubbed death on the street by police or who ever is tasked with removing them. You can find videos of this happening if you look for them.
This video is dated but the banned list is up to date.
The BRI is genius. Projects are brought about by China conceiving a project, engineering it, gaining local political support, financing it, building it with Chinese labor and when the debt can't be serviced takes the natural resources used to collateralize the debt. In the case of dam in close proximity, China gets the energy as well. In response to criticism of China, Xi is now saying China will curtail what many countries say is predatory tactics.
More than a half century ago the US and Russia used this approach to extend their hegemony. One of the greatest dam projects, the Aswan Dam built by Russia, turned into gigantic problems.
Be aware they will push whatever they are selling. Some of the staff have no idea about the technical side of appliances.
I went there to buy a stove. I repeatedly told them I would be using bottled gas. They sold me a stove. When I went to my local gas guy, I learned there are at least three kinds of gas sold. Luckily, B&Q did not deliver as promised. I went back to the store and discovered they had sold me a stove they needed to be hooked up to the gas main. I got my money back.
The sales lady was almost in tears, 没有问题!I don't know if it a safety or design issue, but I would think B&Q would know and care.
Subway starts at 9am. I have no idea where to catch an airport express bus. Eight taxis refused to go to the airport. After almost an hour standing on Beijing Lu took a black taxi, this dude drives slower than my mother, 120 yuan.
Flight back was delayed so I learned the subway stops running at 6:10pm.
Getting a taxi back was easy, more taxis than customers. Taxi was 87 yuan including 1o yuan toll, airport to Beichen area. Yes, he took a longer route than necessary.
Kunming imagines being a gateway for international travelers. New airport but hard to get to and from it.
