Chapter One

I would just say it depends what you are looking for from Chapter One.

The food is not great and it's often hard to find a fuwuyuan to order another beer, but there is no place better than Chapter 1 to hang out on a Friday or Saturday night (they're even showing the Rugby World Cup!), or to spend an afternoon studying.

Don't order a cup of coffee, though.

If you must eat there, the hamburgers are usually decent, but the fries are soggy.

As far as drinks go, as Jared mentioned they have Beer Lao (a bit expensive, but good), but I prefer the wine by the glass, which is often hard to find in Kunming.

Salvador's Coffee House

The service is not the best, but the food more than makes up for it.

I would especially recommend the Mexican food (the cheese quesadilla and salsa is only 14 kuai!), but any of the bagel sandwiches, breakfast meals, pastas, etc. are good.

The ice cream is also great and you can't go wrong for only 10 kuai!

The Happy Hour specials are great too.

Beware that Salvador's is often totally packed during the main dinner rush, though.

You might want to have a back up plan.

Salvador's Coffee House

I have always had a good experience at Salvador's.

The atmosphere and food is pretty good.

The customer service can be hit and miss at times, but the nice fuwuyuans make up with it with their smiles.

The work environment is obviously nice for them.

Some suggestions would be to clean the bathroom more regularly and maybe a little better lighting to make it easier to study!

The Silver Spoon Café

There is no doubt that Silver Spoon is the best western restaurant in Kunming, hands down, put a fork in it.

Excellent salads and a ruben to make you want to drive back the States and slap your mom.

Spice Magic Indian Cuisine (Tongde)

Good food. Good ambience. We had the 2 person set meal and mango lassi. Could tone down the spices a little bit; my mouth was on fire.

I have found this place to be excellent in customer service and food.

The manager is always attentive and ensures that you will get the right order.

Chapter One

I have found this place to be sub-par in customer service and food quality.

The three times i have eaten there, I have had to repeatedly question the fuwuyuans where my food was.

If you don't order at the front desk, forget about it.

The food is bad in general.

The last time I was there, thinking I would give them a "third" chance, I ordered the chicken salad sandwich.

It was more of a mayonnaise sandwich.

I expect more from a western restaurant.

Chapter One

Library by day, pub by night, Chapter One is great for both weekday studying or Friday night libation. Despite its mediocre food offerings, Chapter One has a solid drink menu and a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere.

Food. Last spring I'd come in several times a week for the inexpensive but tasty Indian curry. Over the summer, however, the Indian menu was spun off to create Indian Kitchen (two shops down on Wenlin Jie). Besides the decent burgers, the remaining food leaves a lot to be desired.

A cheese pizza I ate a couple of weeks back had an almost milky consistency and had the aftertaste of some kind of fruit.

Drinks. Chapter One has a comparatively good selection of alcohol. You can choose between slightly up-market imports like Beer Lao (¥16) and old standbys like Dali or Qingdao (both a reasonable ¥8). The bar has at least two or three options for popular liquors like whiskey or vodka. Non-alcoholic options are pretty standard, though I wouldn't recommend the coffee.

Ambiance & Service. With its comfy lounge-like set-up, Chapter One is one of my favorite places in Kunming. The second floor features cushy-couches and sturdy large wooden tables. I've spent countless hours reading and studying there. The servers are friendlier than average, and while helpful generally leave you alone.

Unique Feature. Unlike some other expat restaurants lined book shelves, Chapter One's book collection is definitely worth browsing.

Dianchi Spring Spa

This place is a little off the beaten path, but feels like an escape from the city in the city.

Hotel and hot springs, as well as regular (indoor and outdoor) pools.

The hotsprings and pools are located in a large courtyard/garden area around the hotel buildings.

Some individual villas are available, other rooms all located in mostly newly renovated two story buildings.

Most rooms have huge soaking tubs and separate showers.

Small but nice fitness facility with on site fitness trainer.

Very clean facilities.

Basketball and tennis courts available for additional fee.

Spa day rate: 83RMB (9/2007)

International Nail & Beauty Salon

American owned, very friendly and VERY professional staff.

Very, very clean.

Almost always have some English speaking staff available.

I haven't had any of the beauty/nail treatments, but the foot massage is SO much better than anywhere else I have been in Kunming (with big, comfortable massaging chairs).

Frequent customer plans are also available.
