Prague Café (Wenlin Jie)

Prague Cafe is overall very good - in par with the one in Lijiang. Waitresses are friendly and food reasonably okay. I only hate that there are too many people damn smoking right besides me, forcing me to be a second-hand smoker. Maybe the cafe should set up a no-smoking area....

Teresa's Pizza

Anyone who's eaten pizza here knows that, relatively speaking, it's the best pizza in town. Delivery is prompt, eating there gets you nice buttered french bread with your order while you wait. I have found the staff eager to understand and helpful.

Note to Bernie: You mess up the whole review system when you give a place 0 because you like one of their competitors better.

Blue Bird

Nice atmosphere, and good service. Of course, for 'Western' read 'non-Chinese, for example there is Thai (there is also fish-n-chips). The quantity of food is small for the price. There is no wine-by-the-glass but, because it is a 'club' (a weird idea that you pay extra for) you may buy an expensive bottle and, if you drink only half they will keep the remainder in the frig for your next visit -- really, they believe that next month the opened bottle will still be just fine! There is occasional live music which is incompatible with conversation. But the roof-top level is enjoyable in the summer, and is a great get-away from the live music.

TCG Nordica (new location)

One of the hidden gems in Kunming because it off the beaten path of the culture alley and Wenlin Jie, away from the hustle and bustle of the university area. It's a newly renovated art gallery and cafe. I have eaten here many times and I have never been disappointed. The art is modern and often rotated, the atmosphere is very chic modern and the Swedish meatballs rock. 4 for the food. 5 1/2 for atmosphere. Check the calendar, they have some of the best live music in Kunming too.

Dan Di Coffee

Our last visit displayed the weakness -- the kitchen.

After precisely one hour we had to ask about our order, it arrived ten minutes later.

My colleagues asked me to mention that there were only three other people there and . . . they were'nt eating.

Again, the waiting staff were apologetic, but the owner/manager . . . .
A general question:

Why, almost everywhere, do restaurant owners believe that they can hire some inexperienced staff and, then, disappear?

Ming Tien Coffee

Nice quiet conversation place with plushy sofas, big windows and good selection of coffees and milk teas, if a bit pricey. Food is also good.

Gingko Elite

One of the nicest places to enjoy a meal in Kunming, both inside and out, that is, if the meal were actually enjoyable. The food is sort of haute Yunnan cuisine with strange combinations and few simple, normal dishes. Quality is OK but not really worth the price. Better just have tea, wine or a beer and eat elsewhere.

España Restaurant

Recently returned here after a lengthy absence and was pleasantly surprised that standards have been maintained. I fully agree with the last review. And the cheapest red wine at RMB 118 is actually very good and a better deal than per glass. You can take it away if you don't finish.

Q's Coffee

In all fairness to Salvador's, the "58 yuan" coffee you're talking about includes both ice cream and liqueur (Kahlua or Bailey's) [see: www.gokunming.com/en/microsites/salvadors/menu.php].

Though I haven't been to Q's, I had a similarly disappointing experience at UBC Coffee where my Americano topped ¥40.

The cheapest places I've been to for a decent cup of coffee in Kunming are Dona Donuts (¥5, Jianshe Lu) and McDonalds (¥6).

Although it goes without saying that neither beats Salvador's in terms of taste or class.

Dan Di Coffee

The business card says Dan Di Coffee, it also says Fresh 'crushed' coffee!

But the menu says Dan Di Cafe which is probably what they want.

Having got that little comment out of the way, I'll tell you that the modern, Continental, and cosy atmosphere, complete with soft jazz, puts this cafe on my Go-again List.

Judging by the stated 8:00 am opening time and a great English-language (well, almost) breakfast menu . . . it's a great place for breakfast.

But the variety of food should please anybody at anytime.

And wine-by-the-glass is available.

The young, capable, staff are always smiling . . . if only the manager would.

But, that's enough for now -- I don't want the place to get too crowded.
