I accidently stumbled upon this little beer den when I was on a two man pub crawl with the conspiracy on hitting every place on the Wenlinjie. Though I've never been to game café before, the place next door looked awfully boring, and there was a stash of colourful boxes behind the bar that tempted me to enter. The tunes were swinging, the booze was cheap! And the games were inviting, so we planned to stay for some casual banter! With our pub crawl on halt we managed to make some wonderful friends including the manager, Rich who is an absolute laugh!... great arse. ;) (Girls, if you don't come for the games make sure you come to see that)! He definitely knows how to make two Brits feel like home... and I've come to learn that he also cooks a mean pizza! That's defiantly worth going for. Since then, I've been a game café fanatic! And plan on staying one.

I would like to add a review to this quaint little spot, as it is one of the few places in Kunming that has made an effort to improve its standards, and not just fester in the mediocrity which typifies most of the hovels on Wenlinjie.

First, if you like games, this is where it's at. Playing them isn't dirt cheap, but it's certainly not expensive. A wide range.

As for the food, i mostly get the pizza. It's not outrageously overpriced, unlike a lot of other places in Kunming, and there's also some spicy olive oil to drizzle on. Salads are large and wholesome. The menu in general has improved substantially since some time ago.

The manager, Rich, seems like a very friendly bloke and is attentive to one's culinary needs. The only slight irritation is a couple (but not all) of the fuwuyuans, who often give off that insolent, aloof vibe, which so many waiters do in China.

If they make Chess free, i would be there every day. Chess is a human right. It is not a commodity. Not something to be trifled with. Nevertheless, this establishment has gained the Captain Ahab seal of approval.

I think game cafe really is a cool place.
For those who likes playing games, there's a lot! And the people there can explain the rules of all the games, which i think is awesome (i could never remember all that)

Then there's the waiters, who are all really cool people, talkative and open-minded

The food's good, from the huge salads to the pizzas, with all the french specialties which add a special note.

There's a terrace, which is perfect for the summer days ahead :)
Hanging out with a cold latte or a beer is just what we need!

I would like to give Game cafe a 5-star rating.

I love the atmosphere there. It's essentially a cafe for playing games, and they have a very wide selection in those. The patrons range from Chinese middle school youth in the afternoon to laidback adults in the evenings.

I have no particular interest in games, however, I do go there for the food (salads, pizzas, soups), delicious lattes and the conversation.

Rich is a very dedicated manager and a very charming person, it's him and the staff that make me want to come back :)

To "the truth":

I am the current manager of the Game Cafe, and first let me express my deep shock, and apologize for your experience.

Sunday is day I am usually away from the cafe, but close-by and available to be reached by phone if I am needed. The fact I was never called for when needed is an issue I find very upsetting, and has been thoroughly addressed.

As for the food, the pantry is something I double check before every weekend, and everything you ordered should have been available. The fact you were told they were not is unacceptable, and those involved have been dealt with accordingly.

Thank you for your comments, and again, I am deeply sorry for your trouble and inconvenience. I assure you your next visit will be phenomenally better.

To "nicklash":

The "pancakes" you mention are technically called "crepes", a regional French dish and labelled in the menu as such. They are actually meant to be thin :-)

To others:

As for the general comments & ratings on the lack of drink selection (i.e. alcohol choice, our soft drink selection is quite large) our specialization is games, therefore most of our space is taken up by those, leaving our drinks fridge not the largest. The alcoholic beverages we do supply consist of China's more popular ones, & boast some of the cheapest prices on the street.

If people would like a larger choice to quench their thirst for alcoholic drinks, there is actually a very good bar next door which specializes in world beers. Although I suppose I really should review them and give them one star for their very poor board game selection (joke).

Furthermore, if you would like to play games in a bar with a larger choice of beer and wine, our games are available for rent at a reasonable price, with a small refundable deposit.

Thank you again for your comments and understanding.
