There is a good Video called - The Rise of Bitcoin - It is a good introduction to understand Bitcoin. I downloaded it from Emule today.

also, did bitcoin lose 50% of its value on the stock market in a few days at some point? isn't that risky to own something that could lose so much value in such a short time?

Bitcoin isn't a company, so it's not traded on the stock market, but if you mean as a currency, yes, it has lost ~50% of it's value over the last 9 months or so. I can't recall it going down that much in a matter of days, but it can fluctuate by up to about 30% in a few days, usually levelling off a little below where it previously was.

Basically, if anyone thinks they're going to buy BTC, hold it and become rich, they might as well look elsewhere. That ship sailed about a year ago and now it's just trying to stabilize.
