I've always avoided Dali & Lijiang because of the traffic (and I hate flying). This looks like a great opportunity to explore, in addition to the cities along with way.
It'll now take longer to get to the Kunming high-speed station than to travel Kunming to Dali!
Hey, here it says:
The trains will stop at Kunming Railway Station (on Beijing Road) to pick up passengers and then head for Dali.
This needs to be confirmed. Can we trust this statement at all??
Update: the fastest train will take only 1 hour and 48 minutes.
While the slower train 2 hour and 10 minutes.
Perhaps the faster one leaves from Kunming Railway Station.
It could just as easily be the other way around. Leave from Kunming Station and then travels slow to the high speed network, connecting at Kunming South.
We will have to wait and see.
That would be counterintuitive and unproductive if you look at a map.
Traveling from Chenggong to Kunming City to Dali is a single Northwesterly diagonal path.
Going from Kunming Station to Kunming South then back towards Kunming Station again and onward to Dali would extend the trip beyond 2 hours and 10 min.
Tickets are now sold online so we can check: www.12306.cn
For example, 1st train in the morning, the fastest from Kunming Station (1h48min):
昆明南 7:22-7:40 昆明
昆明 8:12-10:00 大理
Counter intuitive. Nothing new there then.
Ah! So it is a D service and not a G service.
Are they crazy?! 32 minutes waiting time in Kunming station? What for? Having the male attendants going
to smoke one after the other one?
What a waste of money and resources. They build the fast railway network, but then it's managed like shit.
