Forums > Living in Kunming > Renting vs subletting a room

Yes, the only snag I can see is that you need to register you place of residence, and they will want to see some kind of rental agreement. That means the person you are subletting from will need to be your sponsor/host. The flip side is that they are legally responsible for you.

If it is cheap give it a go. But I would expect it to be out of date. Check the date of the last edition. The Chinese travel press, produce books filled with date that a some faceless director has decreed 'this is what foriegn tourists want'.

However, you can't go wrong with Lonely Planet. This is regularly updated. It is also poplulated by people who travel and is aware of what we want. Unlike Chinese books. You may even find LP on torrents.

Also, wikitravel is a useful free resource that is also a living document (continuosly updated).

I would guess, that there has been very little tonic sold over the winter, and so stocks were not really replenished as a priority. But the first flush of hot weather is met with demand for long cool G&Ts.

Off topic, but related to theme songs. When we watched terrestrial TV we listened to the whole theme, even if only in the background while we quickly made a cup of tea or finished off some other chore. With streaming, or watching box sets, we quickly FF over the theme song and titles. We are missing a lot of great music.
Everything else said by the last two posters can be captured within the idea that we no longer live in a society, we live in a market.

A reasonable choice of lumber that has improved over time. Fancy hardwoods like walnut, and mahogany are in abundance. There are some plywood and rubber-wood boards available. There are also some kiln dried imported softwoods and merbao available. Some of the lumber is very green, so look for the kiln dried if you need stable timbers.

Echo everything said by others.
Breakfast great and the serve from 8am. Most other places say 9am and they still are not ready.
Sandwiches are cheap 22-32, and really packed full of filling. We got some sandwiches for a day out, the only mistake I made was ordering two, as this was too much. These are seriously good sangars, and they are wrapped in alu foil.

In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.

They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.

They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.
