Looks like everyones Friday night end of the week rage venting dreams have come true!
No ones apologising nnoble, not sure why you are claiming they are. I also said Gaoxing was "chasing tail", which he was/is by his own admission. At no point did I accuse him of rape.
Dazzer, the important point I believe is the attempt. Thank god he wasn't successful, but on another day he might have been. This bad behaviour reflects badly on lao wai in China because we are stereotyped into one group by many Chinese. Again, unfortunate, but true.
Harriis, who castigates only foreigners? We can (and by the looks of the responses here) castigate anyone we want. No one stated we were castigating only foreigners, I came the closest by saying that when foreigners did something bad, it unfortunately is bad for all of us as the responses to the video show we are all one big group according to many Chinese. As such we should discourage any behaviour of that type in the extreme to other foreigners... to make living in China as easy as possible for us as lao wai. I will castigate anyone however that attempts rape, no matter colour/creed/religion or hairstyle.
Thanks roberto's friend, I think my girlfriends family are slowly understanding, but takes time to bring down years of misunderstanding/ignorance/prejudice. The interesting thing is my girlfriend says here family are very forward thinking and not conservative! There must be some seriously bad impressions out there of foreigners...
Rik, I think we agree in principle on everything except how to change the opinions of stereotyping Chinese people who group lao wai into one group. I think using a collective approach would work best in China (hence my desire to see fellow lao wai pour scorn on the guys actions hopefully making future lao wai visitors to China with a similar attitude think twice), if you believe another way will work, that is your choice. The other thing - please stop misquoting me. Twice you have said "And if they are, you should put them in their place, not apologize or call for harsher punishments for non Chinese." I did not apologize or call for harsher punishments for non Chinese. Putting words in my mouth makes you look silly as it spawns comments on statements that were never made (nnoble's) and makes the argument more extreme and hence opinion more polarised.

Fundraiser: More For Baby children's autism center
Posted byI used to work with scientists in an Environmental Protection Agency - most of them were convinced that autism and many other birth defects are linked to pollutants in our food and environmental systems. These pollutants (everything from heavy metals to simple cleaning agents to pesticides etc) end up accumulating in top predators (humans/tuna etc) where they begin to cause birth defects once they accumulate to a certain level. I remember seeing graphs on the rate of pollutants in environments vs the rates of different birth defects - they almost all followed exactly the same trajectories, to the point that causation was directly implied.
The problem was they didn't know exactly WHICH pollutants caused which defects, which essentially gave them nothing to base banning certain chemicals on. The problem was many chemicals started being used at around the same time, making it very difficult to point fingers. Its a situation where the exact causes aren't known, therefore nothing can be blamed. Which highlights a large problem with legislative process - the precautionary principle isn't followed, what is followed is release of pollutants on a massive scale because there are no studies proving such pollutants ARE harmful (despite having no evidence that AREN'T harmful). To me that is backwards, but it is the way it works unfortunately.
There could be a link between autism and vaccination programs, but I have not seen any data that supports that. I would be more inclined to believe that China's use (and lack of banning) of many known chemicals that cause reproductive disorders is the cause. Hell, they still use DDT here a very strong endocrine disruptor, all but banned in developed countries. Just run down the list of POPs that are considered extremely dangerous... endrin, aldrin, dieldrin... all produced and used within China.

Posted byYep. Very indicative of how important contracts are in China when it comes to rule of law... contracts are worth nothing, even in the highest courts.
Fujian billionaire loses Yunnan Baiyao lawsuit
Posted byI think you mean 1.3 billion in Capital Gain, which is a different thing than dividends. Likely dividend payout on the shares would have been something like $80million yuan (assuming ~$1.2 dividends over the past 5 years)
Learning the art of the crossbow in Yunnan
Posted byNice story!
I thought a crossbow bow drawing apparatus was called a cranequin? I remember reading this from some book about soldiers way back when... you can see Tyrion using a simple one at the end of Game Of Thrones season 4!
