There's plenty of Yankee propaganda about North Korea, but this sounds more like it was produced by UFO believers with creative imaginations. Either that or Sneddon is there and is a convert to the local nationalist religion.

@ Alex: who are 'they'?
@ Spartans: Bully? Mob? I thought this was about a single nutwing possible xenophobe or racist, who apparently didn't even hang around very long. 'Bulking up here in China'? Why especially in China?
Are you guys all really that tightly wound?

Yeah, we are all aware of what is (usually) pretty minor xenophobia - I've noticed it, but haven't suffered any 'occasional beatings' in China in 14 years. Dudeson seems to want to blame the whole country. I'll blame the whole species, if you like. But before we all get ourselves straightened out, note that the dumb event that occurred, for whatever reason, is pretty rare and that there's no pogrom likely. Ideal human compassion and colorblindness and so forth are probably not just around the corner, but I think we'll all be able to pull through anyway.
My sympathies for the unpleasantness, hope the guy calms down and/or is caught, whatever his particular problem might have been.
Hang in there, Dudeson.

I'm not disagreeing, but ALL is a lot.

I also think it's important to look at this in terms of cause & effect - the 'culture right now', like all cultures, has reasons for being - what are they?

In that case, my guess is that you will have to apply for a research visa, not a simple student visa, unless you keep a rather low profile. Research permission comes with a local research assistant, and sometimes these are referred to as 'minders'.

Very interesting account. But wasn't the Swiss organization that was so involved in the preservation of Sideng (the main Shaxi village) also involved in the temple preservation?

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.

Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
