Forums > Living in Kunming > Smiles and China

My observation is that Chinese people sometimes smile at times that most of us laowais would consider a little strange. For example, when discussing the train station incident. I remember watching BBC news, where an eyewitness was telling of how the murderers slashed and stabbed their way through the crowd, and the whole way through the interview he had a big smile on his face. It seemed incredibly inappropriate (to me as a Brit).

Another example is when my friend and her Chinese best friend caught a woman and the security guard(!) red handed stealing the Chinese friend's e-bike. It was all awkward smiles and laughing, whereas in other countries I can imagine it being a much less pleasant (and more threatening) situation.

Who do you think will get out of the group stage? Who will make it through to the quarter finals, semis, and the final?

As the competition goes on we can revisit and see how correct those predictions were.

As always, the results of first few games have made me question some of my assumptions I made before the comp started, e.g. the Netherlands not making it out of their group with Spain and Chile!

I don't know, I don't really care, life is too short to count every kuai! I often marvel at how people get by on salaries below 4000. By saving money wherever they can I guess and earning favours from those better off than them? Rest assured, Kunming is much cheaper than central-ish Hangzhou. Minimum spend in HZ is 2000 per month, for a grotty old apartment with barely any natural light. For a nice 1 bedroom you'll need a minimum of 3000, for a nice 2 bedroom, 4000. My 2 bedroom apartment cost 5000 a month. So, next time you think rent is expensive, think of the poor buggers in HZ!

Blows to the head can cause concussion and head injuries are thought to raise the chances of dementia, parkinsons, alzeimers etc. Brain damage is permanent - I used to work with for a charity helping adults who had suffered brain injuries. Great cause and probably great entertainment, but I suggest that the money could be raised in a more ethical way.

'Environmentalists say that the key to making the water of Erhai Lake cleaner is to stop releasing polluted wastewater directly into it, rather than resorting to engineering solutions for rivers and destroying their ecological diversity and natural beauty in the process.' well yes... I would think that was obvious! Cement won't help, in fact it'll make it worse as plants can't grow on cement so you lose some filtration effect.

nice shots, seems like drones can do a surprisingly good job, I would have thought that wind etc would make it hard to hold the camera steady

a very pleasant park with a tall pagoda you can climb and take photos of the city if you wish. Roses in summer, blossom in spring, nice lawn to sit on, bbq areas.

Recently the food seems to be better. Decent steak at a decent price, decent pizza, some decent wine, and the music is more suitable these days (Rammenstein wasn't the right mood music for Cantina)!

Had lunch - grilled chicken on top of mashed cuttlefish and a salad. The chicken was tasty and well cooked, and there was plenty of meat/fish to fill up even a hungry person. The salad was overdressed and nothing special - I won't order one next time. The service is a decent imitation of what you might find in the west. A large menu of food and drink. A nice civilised place to go for food or drink, but some of the dishes (i.e. the steaks) are very pricey. You could easily spend 300rmb+ per person here. Equally, it is possible to have lunch for under 60rmb per person (as we did). Warning - the bottle of water on each table costs an eye watering 48rmb! Don't be a sucker by opening it!

Went for a spot of lunch. Best pizza I've had in Kunming by some distance. In fact, one of the best pizzas I've ever had - quality ingredients, thin base, cooked to perfection. Sashimi salmon tasted very fresh and was well presented. The drinks are expensive, and one of the waiters was letting the side down by being a bit scruffy and impolite (hence not 5 stars), but definitely go and try the pizza.

Not bad. Pizza base was a little thick for my taste. Great selection of craft beers in the fridge, a few beers on tap, and well priced mixed drinks and cocktails. Staff were pleasant. A 14" pizza is the perfect size for two people, and very reasonably priced at 45-70RMB. Beware that the English menu, whilst written in perfect English, is not necessarily accurate. I ordered the 'local one' pizza expecting pepperoni and mango but got neither. The waitress explained that was a mistake on the menu. Would be nice if the menu corresponded with what you get on the plate! Hopefully this will get sorted.
