I'd like to add Django to that list. It would be quite the spectacle to see backwoods Chinese respond to an American movie with the white man being portrayed as less than a god and demeaning ethnic minorities only to see his just deserts being served by a black man. Don't suppose that would change the language schools from posting 'White Only' job adds though (This is more a beef with Chinese than with white/Europeans)...

Forums > Living in Kunming > Expat Musicians in Kunming

Now, I'm still 4 months out from my departure so I really have no clue. I would appreciate any responses. I am aware of the Kunming musicians Facebook, but considering restrictions on internet access, I don't know how much I should read into what I'm seeing.

I've just had these visions, as an American, of going to Kunming and playing with a bunch of Expats from places like Frankfort, Amsterdam, Bern, Torino, Budapest etc as opposed to Philadelphia and New York...

Don't get me wrong, I love the prospect of playing with Europeans and people from other counties, I should be a better musician and person for it (The talent that has gone through venues like the North Sea Jazz Festival etc... has been amazing over the years), but I was curious if anyone could confirm or deny my outsider observation?

I guess until I'm actually in KM, I can only daydream about how things will go so I a thank any one willing to indulge me ;)

Forums > Living in Kunming > Internet Almost Unusable, VPN resetting

I've been spending months in preparation for my KM move and I've pretty much conceded on all changes I will have to expect. But this internet thing is the one last item that lingers... Perhaps if I did not already know that my stay would be no longer than 2 years I might reconsider, but I figure I can survive 2 years with restricted internet access.

I do hope I will have occasional unrestricted access through some back doors. For instance, I have a bunch of music production apps on my tablet that would benefit from occasional updates even if it is just WiFi and not 3G/4G. Any information on the possibility of updating through Google Play or from the Apple Store?

Forums > Living in Kunming > Kunming advice

The comments on Beijing vs Kunming are making me much better. As a laowai who will be starting my China experience in Kunming, I was very much trying to avoid anything like Beijing or Shanghai. I thought about Chongqing, but I'm still iffy on that one. As a person who was born and raised in NYC, lived in Atlanta and near DC, spent too much time in places like LA and Chicago, I got tired/Jaded with all of that. I figured, though the language and ethnicities may be rearranged, places like Beijing and Shanghai would be more of the same. Kunming sounds like a true break from the big city which I hope I can truly appreciate.
