Forums > Living in Kunming > I CAN'T FIND......WHAT ?

Top of my list is... my American family and friends.

I would also add:

-decent deodorant (second that one!)
-an affordable electronic English/Chinese two-way dictionary with both pinyin and character input

Forums > Travel Yunnan > Where to buy international plane tickets?

Where is a good place to buy discounted airline tickets in Kunming? Should I go to the Hump or Camillia Hotel travel agencies, or are there better places?

Does anybody know of travel agents in the far north part of Kunming, such as near the Walmart on Beijing Lu? That would be most convenient for me.

I tried the websites recommended by others on this forum, but I couldn't get any of them to work for Kunming to Vientiane, Hong Kong, or Hanoi flights. Anybody know how to buy international air tickets online?

Thanks for your advice.

Forums > Food & Drink > A delicious new Italian restaurant in northern Kunming

I would like to recommend a new Italian restaurant, The Box II. I just ate there last night and enjoyed a fresh salad, pizza, and eggplant dish. I'm going to have to go back for dessert, since I was too full to have some last night, and their tiramisu sounds heavenly.

The Box II is located near the Wicker Basket, at Beichen Xiaoqu-Beichen Zhonglu at the eastern end of Shangye Buxingjie (kind of near Metro). It is located on a peaceful pedestrian street and run by two friendly Germans. It is a relaxing setting and would be a great place to take friends or family. They also have free WiFi.

They have 10% off food this month (May) and 25% off drinks, so now would be a great time to try this new Italian place.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Moving to KM from the US; cell phone questions

I bought the cheapest new cell phone I could find in Kunming in one day last summer for about 400 yuan (~US$50). You can get cheaper ones second-hand, but I've heard that many of those are stolen and resold phones.

There are a variety of China Mobile cell phone plans, which different based on a set monthly fee (usually 5-50 yuan) and then different fees per minute of usage (For example, my plan costs 0.18 yuan/minute to call and is free to receive calls when I'm in Kunming. Outside of Kunming, it costs me 0.6 yuan to make a call and 0.4 yuan to receive one. Other plans have higher per-minute charges but then don't jump if you leave Kunming city). You can start and stop the plans at any time -- no long-term contract necessary. You buy 100Y top-up cards all over the city at street vendors, and you can bargain for those down to 70-90 yuan).

Forums > Living in Kunming > NGOs In Kunming

There are others in addition to the ones listed on the new GoKunming site that Matthew mentioned, including:

World Wildlife Fund (WWF)

Yunnan EcoNetwork (YEN): www.yen.ngo.cn
(This NGO is quite small. The director is very friendly and welcomes international collaborators/interns. The director splits his time between an office in Kunming and his village environmental education school in Lijiang. He likes visitors and especially help editing grant proposals and teaching English at the Lijiang village school.

I went today. The "underwear models" were a few people walking around on stage in nightgowns (women) and Calvin Klein briefs (men). There was a museum exhibit containing ancient paintings, vases, tea pots, fans, etc. depicting various revealing acts.

In the sex toy sale area, there was a chair with two seats, one a stool that moved back and forth towards the other side. Also, there was a yoga ball with attached dildo for using in various positions, as well as a vibrator made of coiled wire for electric shocks.

The crowd was mostly middle-aged Chinese couples. Worth a visit if you have nothing better to do, but not as exciting as it sounds.
