Hitler, vegetarianism, artificial insemination, and McDonalds...(scrolls back to page 1)...yup, this thread was started by mmkunmingteacher.
@bluegrass14, "@yankee00 The Burger King next to Metro in the north opens this Thursday, not sure if they have any type of grand opening event or will just have a truckload of flower bouquets lined up outside their front doors?"
We will most likely see advertisements on the forum. It's apparently opening in a week.
@Magnifico
I havent researched veganism. But it is nice to see u have recently learned the difference between that and vegetarianism. As to whether vegans snub their noses at vegetarians, I wouldnt like to make such a gross generalsiation. The fact that u think they do is interesting tho. Do u think anyone with a different diet automatically looks down on those who follow a different diet? I have known a few vegans in my time. Perfectly nice ordinary people. Have u ever actually known a vegan?
The doctor u mention is ill-informed.
haha. no, i don't hang out with vegans.
Like most groups of people, we tend to notice those who make a 'song and dance' about an issue. The more radical and zealous are more likely to get on the soap box and bang the drum, and demonise others who do not conform to their ideology.
I use the word ideology deliberately, as things that are a lifestyle choice (politics, diet, religion, gender issues, etc.) become an ideology when radicalised, or become a cause for zealots.
However, the vast majority of people in any group are moderates, and don't even get noticed.
@tigertiger
You put it well. I have the same view except I equate ideology with religion. Most ideologies are, to me, extremely similar to religions: require belief in something that is difficult or impossible to prove, require a set of behaviors mandated from afar, adherents refuse to discuss issues rationally and quickly get to ad hominem attacks when unable to convert others.
"The doctor u mention is ill-informed."
what makes you so sure? are you sure you're not letting your emotions dictate here?
Nah, ur doc gave u some bs. Simple fact. Seems to me exactly the opposite is much more common. I rarely see vegetarians giving out stick to meat-eaters. But I have very often seen meat-eaters attack vegetarians as tho they take the fact that someone doesnt eat meat as a personal insult. But hey whatever...
Like I said, we notice those who are banging the drum.
I for one have been hit with the meat is murder message. I have also been put down for a being a demitarian. How was it put now? Something along the lines of, if I was concerned about the ethical treatment of meat I should 'man up' and go full veggie. This was also in said in excessively emotive terms. I think that people who have experienced an attack by a radical are more likely to see vegetarians/vegans as radical, and be hostile towards them. People don't notice the many vegetarians that practice their choice quietly.
As some of the postings on other topics here have shown, people don't like people who presume to teach us how we should live. That will often promote a hostile reaction. If people start telling people how they should live, that is up to them, but then shouldn't be surprised if attacked.
