Forums > Living in Kunming > Forest fire in the North

I saw the smoke, quite impressive, it seemed like a forest /brush fire by the colour of the smoke.
Do residential building fires happen in China ? What building could burn?

Hi Colin, I was hoping I would get you in this post.

Ok, great info about Kashmir and the Gulmarg Resort being the place to go; this could be a possible future destination for the club. Pow-pow-der sounds great.
Is the terrain challenging? some steep stuff? open terrain?
This could also be a destination for paragliding.

I agree with Colin on Yunnan back country exploration/skiing; it's closer to KM, nature inspired and cheaper than air fare and hotels.
Is the back mountain (north face)of tiger leaping gorge possible to ski?? I read about this slope in the magazine "Yunnan".

I need to go to Canada this summer or fall for a few weeks and I'll bring my skis and gear to KM.... I might as well use it here cuz it's going to rot over there in storage.

Hey legriffon. JP .

Boards are cheap in Canada spring time, used or new, maybe I can bring one with boots ...
Check the price here in China and we can compare with transport and canadian price to see if it's worth it to bring from Canada..

Ahmet...
Good info about Yabuli, temperature is like Quebec city where I ski, -1000oC!!
What is the terrain like ? groomed/beginner/intermediate?
Open terrain with steep sections?

A true local Kunming phrase for someone acting crazy....

"What kind of mushrooms have you been eating?"

After 3 years of snow hiatus I now have the urge to carve a few turns in snow or ice.

Where are the ski resorts?

How many of you would be interested in a ski club for various levels?

I would like to organize ski trips, I'm planing long term....next year..

Huge profit is the main focus instead of having a proper educational system. Pure greed.

If the officials in charge of education allowed sufficient number of schools it could be managed, but instead they limit the amount of schools creating a high demand and price gouging;
way off the ethical charts for a socialist country, let alone doing their public duty. These well placed officials and school owners only focus on profit; high profit.

This is the example of "not respecting others" in my original post, placing high profit ahead of public education and only taking care of their friends whom own the existing schools...

Indirectly these well placed people are responsible for this accident.

Look at the facts.
Do you really think no one wants to open new schools?

Do you really think schools would be starving for students and money if the Gov allowed new schools??

Where is the first aid personel for this school? that's if they have any..
Profit is the reason for this accident, craming so many in one school.
Another aspect of corruption is that I assume these schools are protected from new schools opening.Again, profit as a motive..

China has a long way to go if it wants to intergrate with the rest of the world...it's respect for others is truly non existant.

Got to visit this peak and fly from it in clear weather...which is predictable BTW.

Instead of building walkways couldn't they make paths with signs to stay on the path? In addition to a presentation by locals to explain why it's important to stay on the path.
