A sad story indeed. Is she totally sure that she is pregnant? Girls can miss periods and even show up as pregnant on tests without actually being pregnant. If she has had several positive tests (say 5 or more), then she can be pretty sure. Also, how many weeks pregnant is she? If more than 10, then this decision needs to be made urgently - better to abort early if that is the decision. If she is in high school, which means she is 18 at the oldest, the bloke shouldn't have shagged a school girl. Give her the emotional support that you can. Talk through the options with her (termination, adoption, or trying to keep). Its a very horrible situation, but she can get through it.

Not sure about the more than half are women bit, especially when you factor out the under 16s and the over 60s and factor in the preference for boys that led to a (admittedly unknown) number of missing baby girls. Official stats suggest around 30million, but of course there are probably many girls whose births just weren't reported and so don't appear on the records. Also, the vast majority of the women are looking for a serious boyfriend that will lead to a husband, although I think for foreigners some girls are happy to just try the sex (perhaps out of curiousity) without wanting a long term relationship.

Called me naive, but people need some kind of connection in order to have a romantic relationship. Yes, of course, practical things like money are important, but getting the girl requires more than just buying her gifts and looking after her, it's usually a combination of luck (circumstances), looks, pheromones, and most importantly - shared thoughts, feelings and experiences.

these new bikes seem to be working really well. The government scheme bikes are pretty much redundant now. I'd like to give the idiots who threw the bikes into the river several good hard slaps.

Okay, but it should be consistent, cos its not just vendors, who are only trying to make an honest living, blocking the roads and pavements. The parking in the middle of the road, across junctions, across pavements which I see nearly everywhere everyday is ridiculous. Once in a blue moon you see a traffic officer putting a ticket on them, but it clearly isn't frequent enough or severe enough to deter dangerous parking. If you are happy to let people buy cars (and accept huge revenues in taxes on said cars), you have to manage the problems that come with it. As well as law enforcement, that means a proper place for the cars to be parked. Multi storey car parks with cheap rates would probably do the trick. Or those vertical lots you see in London and NYC that can somehow shuffle the cars.

a very pleasant park with a tall pagoda you can climb and take photos of the city if you wish. Roses in summer, blossom in spring, nice lawn to sit on, bbq areas.

Recently the food seems to be better. Decent steak at a decent price, decent pizza, some decent wine, and the music is more suitable these days (Rammenstein wasn't the right mood music for Cantina)!

Had lunch - grilled chicken on top of mashed cuttlefish and a salad. The chicken was tasty and well cooked, and there was plenty of meat/fish to fill up even a hungry person. The salad was overdressed and nothing special - I won't order one next time. The service is a decent imitation of what you might find in the west. A large menu of food and drink. A nice civilised place to go for food or drink, but some of the dishes (i.e. the steaks) are very pricey. You could easily spend 300rmb+ per person here. Equally, it is possible to have lunch for under 60rmb per person (as we did). Warning - the bottle of water on each table costs an eye watering 48rmb! Don't be a sucker by opening it!

Went for a spot of lunch. Best pizza I've had in Kunming by some distance. In fact, one of the best pizzas I've ever had - quality ingredients, thin base, cooked to perfection. Sashimi salmon tasted very fresh and was well presented. The drinks are expensive, and one of the waiters was letting the side down by being a bit scruffy and impolite (hence not 5 stars), but definitely go and try the pizza.

Not bad. Pizza base was a little thick for my taste. Great selection of craft beers in the fridge, a few beers on tap, and well priced mixed drinks and cocktails. Staff were pleasant. A 14" pizza is the perfect size for two people, and very reasonably priced at 45-70RMB. Beware that the English menu, whilst written in perfect English, is not necessarily accurate. I ordered the 'local one' pizza expecting pepperoni and mango but got neither. The waitress explained that was a mistake on the menu. Would be nice if the menu corresponded with what you get on the plate! Hopefully this will get sorted.
