Forums > Living in Kunming > Is Kunming Racist?

Alright Arron and Zitony, how do I make this easy.

Writing in general about how racist a certain type, race, minority of people is, makes you .......taaaadaaaa....'Racist'!

Actually to be correct 'only'- just biased or racially prejudiced but still the same ballpark...and before you get mad, check out what I found online.

Definition of racism:
1) The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or

abilities specific to that race, esp. so as to distinguish it as...
2) Prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of a different

race based on such a belief.

And Zitony I thought this is exactly what you try to avoid or prevent from happening to you and by confirming the point of Aaron "Of course Kunming is racist" without ever actually even being here...well what do you want me to say. This is so funny, and as they say in french: 'connerie'

Sidenote: 'gestalt' way doesn't make any sense in German, it would rather be 'vorgegeben/den leichten Weg'...-gestalt means "figure, character, shape'.

Back to the point! This is China's most culturally diverse Province with 5 major religious groups peacefully (compared to other nations) co-existing and I am certain this can only be from Kunming's famous racism...haha

Zitony I recommend to stay away from Yunnan or whole China, because you will find exactly what you are looking for since you can't open your eyes for the tolerant sides of China/Yunnan and thus, just confirmed my guess.
Actually I thought you wanted to really figure out if KMG is racist, also stay real this not an Utopian Province or country, where people hug each other all day for their individualism. Wish it would be, though.

It only has the same racial prejudices you and aaron seem to have but all my black friends have experienced very little, not more or less than I did and most of them enjoy living in China.
I say again a good chat with those people, at least for that day, gave them a different idea. You can't save everyone, so screw the rest.

p.s.
You have never experienced racism in England? Wow lucky you. I'm caucasian and racism found me after 8 hours into England, still being in Heathrow.

we have to keep in mind that China has been shut down from foreign (European) influences for literaly thousands of years, and is still so Nationalistic (still) that prejudice and state control media is playing the prejudice ball as they need or like it.

Plus the majority of people won't get an education like it's offered in the west and TV replaces political education, you can see there is massive potential for bias, prejudice and intolerance.
(E.g. I had a preschool class and taught like and dislike, when I asked a 5 year old boy what he dislikes, with no pause he shout out:"JAPAN!", while most other kids said, cauliflower, drawing, mom screaming etc.

I experienced some racism but China is also very tolerant in its way of intolerance. They might see you as an intruder and with a rascist eye, first but if you have a chance to have a chat with them the wonderful curiosity of the people here will completely switch and become so interested.

It goes both ways positive and negative, for example once in Henan in 2000 a local bloke told me (and he was certain about it, he actually got mad when I told him what's really going on, he was ABSOLUTELY certain that the roads in Germany are made of Gold,"literally" and when you retire in Europe you are rich, that's why old people drive such good cars and have their own houses (plural).
I inquired and he said he read it in the news. I didn't want to ruin his dreams, but I asked where exactly the place was because I wanted to live there too. (Scraping the gold of the road and drive fat-a.. cars.)

Point is, it's education and exposure. Show them you are a good person (which you seem to be) and people will be soooooo friggin nice. I love this about China/Yunnan/Kunming.

Nothing on paper in China is real, so get over here change peoples minds by being around and feed their curiosity. Everybody get's a little rascism here, black a bit more than others, but even Chinese get their share (e.g. ask people what they think about people from Henan)
...but it's very easy, compared to the West to change their minds.

If I ever have the choice to cure a Southern State Redneck or a Chinese from their racism, I for sure chose the latter.

Disclaimer:
When I say 'China' that doesn't mean all people here I mean the group of people that is in question. I love China and the people here they have rotten jerks but also the nicest people on earth in equal shares.

So even when I rant about it, it's not the good people living in this country......It had to be said
Cheers, China you are a great host!

PS: I know my posts are massive but I like writing, so what can I do?lol

Hi Zitony,
First the questions is weird, questions like: does the pope have balls, how green is blue, who cleans the sun, why is spain, when is Hitler, is kunming rascist? Those are all questions without answers.

Yes as Tigertiger said this place is as rascist as any other place and not at all, at the same time.

Thanks to the media and prejudices (thank the gov of the 80-90's for that) black people have a bad reputation and some (fewer than everyone thinks) bad people in those enclaves in Guangdong and other provinces ruin it for the good black ones. (That goes for the whitey too)

But you already answered your question and it seems like you are looking to proving your point. (that KMG is rascist)
What do you want? You just said you got accepted at a school, so why argue further about it.

Most schools don't accept a certain clientel because of the Visa and explanaitions they have to give those lazy grumpy-diva officials.

You have to line up behind the philippines (south asian sea issue) and actually even the british (after an attempted rape in Beijing) I heard Visas of the longer kind are difficult to get.

So if you really wanna study here, do it like most students do, get a tourist visa, sign up and pay in a school (and even KEATS, will take you with a handkiss after seeing your packed wallet) and they will process your Visa without any complains.(to make sure, check if your country has any issues with the China gov. or vice versa).
That way it's gonna be even cheaper than getting all your papers in Uganda.

If you just wanna prove that people are rascist you will find all the answers you need for your point. obviously you will only accept that answer and then you are also building your own rascism, right there.

If you are prejudiced about the "the people" in KMG or Yunnan are, without heeding the people saying it's not, then you left the safe haven of PC and are actually on the rascist side.

Theoretically speaking in terms of the psycholgy behind rascism. No offence just pointing out how this works...

Trust me you will like it here, there are a bunch of black guys around here, and life is awesome even though sometimes a bit rough and weird. Also a lot of people see curiosity* as rascism here.

'*we are on mars again how cool is that!

Forums > Study > I want to learn kung fu or wing chun

Hi Cisco
don't worry about the location, you will find a coach/master, or like in most cases a master will find you.....somehow.
They have absolutely fabulous (if not the world best) taiji masters living in KMG, try to find a man called Yang Laoshi. He is incredible.
And who thinks that Taiji is not a martial art? For anyone that is unaware, Taiji is a complete and complex martial art and even, practicing the slow styles will prove extremely effective in fight. It's about study of movement, move implications, qi, breathing and repetition, doesn't matter how fast you practice the moves.
That counts for modern wushu as well, tumble in a few fights and imagine how surprised i was, that my good old gymnastics-Wushu helped me out in fights.

Famous location don't mean anything, I practices in Shaolin (Henan) and it's complete bollocks, I have seen the great super masters (last deciple of Yip Man or something) and a few other WingChun lessons in Honkong, an I wouldn't spend a dime on it....and they make you!!
I had a better coach in high school than those AMAZING HONGKONG W.C. MASTERS.

What a rip-off, I'm sure there are a few good ones in HK but you won't find them through associations and such stuff. You will find the right master coach, somehow or vice versa.

I went to Wudangshan to practice Taiji and I found a good school, in an old fortification/mansion but far away from the main gate and schools. Was excellent training, nice coaches and everything was perfect for 600 kuai a month, food lodging included

.......unfortunately cabbage everyday, which sucked, lead to a lot of farting in practice, the students loved it, qualifies as martial art, too but more of the biological warfare kind.

A good coach will see talent or skills and will feed it, but most coaches are just discouraged and bored and in for a quick buck. So you also need to be careful and change if you don't learn anymore.
And to be honest to start or revisit your favorite martial art i think for the first 6 month you are fine even with a senior martial artist as coach, don't think you need a Mega-Master to learn your stances etc.

plus, that gives you time to look around for a coach, when you made enough progress and ready to switch to a higher level coach.

Places around Kunming,

-Yang laoshi....trust me ask around you will find him...... [Taiji]
-Shaolin Temple KMG branch (the xiaoxue not the actual temple)...they

are all kids there but some of the coaches are great expelaining every

tiny move to you. I trained with them for a short while (free of charge

but had to skip due to relcation.)...[Mix of traditional and modern

wushu)

-plenty of Winchun school in KMG, at least 3 around xiaoxi men (don;t know the exact location but ask a chinese friend to go online and find out)
-Takwondo and Karate is all over the place (gyms), some also offer Taiji but saw only one good class (downside=packed with students) in the gym on top of the parkson on nanpingjie.

Btw. If (any of) you find some modern wushu coach on your journey, let me know.....starving for modern wushu lessons.

Oh about the war on drugs, ...sorry to tell you but the only ones that thought the strategy is a good idea, were...well americans (political americans). Same in Vietnam/Nicaragua/ South Africa....the list is long...
Plus the war against drugs was never about the "against", same with war on "terror"..etc...

you want to fix your countries drug issues look around. The Netherlands is a good example, now taking over in some parts of California and woooops, it works. Isn't it beautiful!

Sorry I love Americans and Chinese, everyone for that matter. When I mock you or talk about "You", I mean the country not the individuals. It's directed to the political, religious and rightwing (pretty much the same thing), nutjobs.

So in my opinion.....Go beetle, go! But I think there are dangers as well. When it becomes a big business then all the people in life stock would change and let it become the same rotten business. And I think a few escaped colonies of something after a healthy amount of mutation can kill the same amount of vegetation as they saved....but in minutes.

Is it a great way to balance diet and help nature? ..Sure! but it needs to be handled with care.

About transportation versus life stock fart. It's true (in terms of tons in relation to efficiency) but also because car combustion engine produce greenhouse gas in a quite small amounts (comparitively).

But considering the waste or resources just to produce on damn kilo of meat, is unbelievable and doesn't make sense. From the soil to the chemicals we feed those poor creatures. To mega tax, non-green food would be a good option. There si a lot of fake green food but that is still better than the best non-green food.

Some insects taste good, if you don't eat them in those touristy spots. I had some insects in a proper (local) food place and it wasn't too bad. If you overcome you creeps.

The whole problem is so far progresed that is needs help everywhere, soiltreatment, farming, water treatment, animal food, and most important a change in our minds. If you buy a burger for a US$ (&the prices we expect), you can figure that everything in it is from exploitation of others and the environment.

no!...please...
I love Chinglish! Nothing better on a crappy day, than walking down the streets,
-reading what sort of plants are being raped=park signs,
-what cuelty has been shown to food-in menues,

-or whoever designed those roadsign being drunk and just throwing letters together that looked the most appealing.
I blame it on the baijiu.

I say save Kunming's Chinglish.

You have to love China for it's inefficinecy and stupidety, sometimes.
When I entered Changshui airport the first time I sensed that it's below any international standards,

(hence..not even soap in the washrooms).

Even the old AP was better managed and designed. Like most things in China the package looks great and what you find inside, is rubbish or crappy knockoffs.

Sorry guys you had to go through this, I'm not a fan of airports but I always enjoy Chinese prestige object failing....because there is the only consistency, the only efficiency... efficiency in sucking, with a 99.9% failure rate. :)

bluppfisk
you are absolutely right fog is generally no problem (wind is...as with humans).
There is a CAT scale measuring the fog density and only the CATIIIc requires certain equipment and experience by the pilot and crew. CATIIIc needs autoland sytems (not autopilot) guessing Chinese Airlines don't invest in it...it's quite expensive.

All others are ok to approach and land with ILS... I wasn't there but I sincerely doubt it was CATIIIc that day. Plus usually normal airports have weather reports and are able to reroute in time to avoid what happend to you guys.

Also NORMAL airports have emergency staff...handing out free tea/coffee, soups, blankets, ticket returns and have a relation officer walking around making sure you are, as well as possible. Well, NORMAL airports.

For the cats at China Air Traffic...even rain, the least of all weather problems, brings the new Beijing airport to a complete shutdown. They literally closed all air traffic for as little as heavy rain.

They even have the regulation that there has to be 10 minutes space inbetween take offs in rain.

I guess Chinese airline pilots fly with a compass in their lap and wind speed is measured by licking the finger and hold it out of the window...

Again sorry guys but man I love China for that stuff. Welcome China to the 21st Century and Changshui airport to the 19th, if lucky. Was even reported on CCTV..Great job Kunming!

Sorry this probably belongs into the forum section...But just to clarify and thanks to overrated reviews I went to CC with high expectations to get some delicacies, I wanted to surprise my wife with a delicacy and there was absolutely nothing that Parkson, Metro or Carrefour don't have.I don't like Chorizo so there has to be more than just that to make me give 5 stars.Plus I already gave them 3 stars, for the very positive things I experienced. There are no products that other shops don't offer, except if their products are home made but I didn't see any labels stating it's organic or home made. For the cold cuts I found as well as the cheeses are all (or most) available at other stores.I didn't know that they make sandwiches and I will give that a try especially knowing that Sandra is involved in the making which usually leads to a yummy tummy. But again as delicacy shop it's very unimpressive and as stated before I believe it will get better. So I am not bashing it but trying to help the owners to give some ideas not just applause because I like Sandra's food...which I do.So I recommend to give realistic reviews. 5 stars just because you like one item there will just disappoint potential CC patrons that are not going for Sandwiches or Chorizo. It's a shop with tons of potential and I will come back to try the Sandwich and see what else they will have in future. But giving more than 3 stars for what I saw wouldn't be fair.

I went there and all the fake Ikea (furniture) items were almost twice as much as the originals at Ikea. The fixing guys are good but as mentioned above at least need a week or two to drill 4 holes in the wall.

The little knick knacks are ok and reasonably priced. For real furniture, I wouldn't buy there. Better and cheaper options available. But good for cheap and nice decorations and accessories.

I practiced there for a few weeks but unforntunately I had to stop, due to relocation.
It's a good school but what I didn't like was the Martial Arts blend between traditional kungfu and modern wushu, similar to the Henan one.
But I still like it for the good exercise, staff and classmates.

I am not sure if there are actually some real kungfu monks, so if you are looking for the full martial package, you might get disappointed, as almost anywhere in China.

Be aware that practice is not in the temple but in a kungfu school one block away

That said, it is in my opinion the best choice in Kunming to practice the closest to real martial arts (besides taiji). And it's very reasonably priced.
