Having lived in DongBei for a while (though not in Harbin), I want to second hedgepig's comments on the food. You'll find nothing even close to the veggie selection of Kunming. In winter you'll be limited to potatoes, bai cai, turnips, and maybe cabbage. At supermarkets you might be able to find a bit more, at exorbitant prices. The summer is better, but still lacking.
Anyway, for me, the food was the single biggest problem about living there. Otherwise it's not bad. A bit too humid in summer, but tolerable.
Kunming is a great city to live in, except for one big problem: the overcrowding and the attendant problems it brings. The traffic is horrific, and riding a bike in the city entails breathing lots of car and bus exhaust.
I visited Guilin a few years ago, and it seemed that the traffic then was better than Kunming's now, but I dunno how they compare today.
Tex, if your goal is to secure an English teaching job in KM, I don't think you have to worry about waiting it out; you just have to contact people directly.
If you're a native speaker, you're reliable and enthusiastic, and you have teaching experience, you have a great shot at getting a tolerable job at any of the schools posting want ads on this site--or any other site listing KM schools. Probably almost any school in the city would be thankful to have you (and to kick out the poser tourist they might have "teaching" for them).
If you're looking for something a little higher up the ESL ladder, you can ask around or look online and get the email for the foreign affairs departments at the local unis, and send them your resume. Give them a call, too. (Though it is late in the season to try to secure this kind of job.)
Anyway, just contact them, go in and do a quick interview, and choose the one that suits you. I don't think it has to be any more complicated than that.
You're right, I did resort to name calling, at least initially. No offense intended. My point was something about the difference between worthwhile political discussion and ego-stroking. But either way, Limbaugh or Moore, have fun.
Kudos to Gokunming for speaking to participants and reporting on this incident. And even more kudos to the protesters who took the time, made the effort, and were undeterred from speaking truth to power.

Videos: Clique and Gangnam Style by The Dangsters
Posted byGangnam style with Kunming touches. Signing the busker's guitar was hilarious enough to have been in the original video. Nicely done.
By the way, I couldn't find you in there, Sandy. Too many great dancers.
