Have you explored whether a student visa might be available from a private language school regardless of your age?

I understand that it might not be your first choice because it would involve attending some classes and paying tuition fees. But it might allow you to remain in Kunming until something more suitable becomes available.

Thank you. I researched it yesterday in several other places as well, and it seems clear that it is too early to even think about returning.

Having your "boots on the ground" input has focused my planning. Appreciate all the good help.

It's 收废品 for the people who ride around on the 3-wheel bikes 三轮车 and collect broken appliances. I'm not sure of the term for the smaller-scale "dumpster divers."

The CNAC exhibit, which is on display now, February 2009, is extremely intersting and well done. Worth a trip. The museum charges no admission and the Number 1 Kunming bus goes there.
