it's called Surmont, if you go out of Think UK from the South gate (the one next to Construction Bank), turn right and go straight for 500 mt untill the crossroad. The gym is on your left on the second floor, there's a big China Merchant bank on the ground floor. They had hot yoga every day at 7.30 pm, sometimes very good, sometimes ok, depending on the teacher. The class on Sunday evening was the best, but the schedule might have changed.it was 1100 for a year or 800 for 6 months, if I remember correctly.
does anybody know how much Yutao Yoga is?
Hi,
I have just moved over to Kunming and am staying around the Yuantong Bridge/Beijing Road area.
I am keen to join a gym, would prefer a trial or pay as you go type gym if possible to get started.
I have read that the Surmount gyms are pretty reasonably priced. I discovered the powerhouse gym and nearly fell over when they wanted 780 for a month!!
Won't be living for too long in the Yuantong bridge area as we are looking for another apartment.
I will be working on Longxiang Jie, near Green lakes.
thanks, Martin
Powerhouse i think is a foreign gym, so prices will be ridiculous. Ronnie coleman came to China and promoted it iirc.
If you are planning on moving around, Haoheng might be an option, since you can use all of their gyms with one card in addition of a small fee
Gyms in Kunming -
Powerhouse (宝力豪)
Just awful. Way way overpriced, I think this year it's 3500 for a year! The trainers are no good, sometimes it's really busy, nothing really special about the equipment, and since it's on the 7th floor, the air is AWFUL in the summer. (they have AC units but when I was there there was only 3 for the whole place and one was broken.)
Surmount (超越)
Better than Powerhouse by far. More equipment, better air, and usually don't have a problem fighting over equipment. Only one squat rack - yea, for some reason they love smith machines over here. Surmount is around 300 a month, but if you go there near Spring Festival time I got a deal for the whole year for 1400, which was nice.
Right now, I'm actually using Yunnan University Gym (云南大学健身室). The equipment very very old, but the price is amazing. You can go for 13 times for 50 kuai! You can squat, deadlift, they have dumbbells etc (everything I need at least). One of the guys that runs the place is an ex-pro martial artist/weightlifter and he's been pretty much giving me free lessons ever since I've been going there...definitely worth it for me! My advice overall though is just stay away from Powerhouse and you'll probably be best suited for a mid-range gym like Surmount or HaoHeng, but if you have any questions feel free to PM me!
Baohai park in the south has a sweet little gym. Has everything you need, but not a lot of machines. During the day there are usually only 2 or 3 other guys in there with me.
Thanks for the heads up guys. I realised that Hao Heng gym was near where i am living so I walked up and had a look round. Price was 1600 for the year and there were lots of running machines and fixed weight machines. Very quiet when I went in at 2pm. Lots of classes too, which I know the misses will like. They do have 7 gyms in Kunming which is good.
However we are only staying Yuantong street area for another week or so while we search for a more family friendly area to live Beichen area just outside the 2nd ring road NE side.
Interestingly, we are working quite close to the Yunnan University so I will go for a visit as this can get me going.
Come to think of it, maybe a pay as you go gym might be perfect until I sort out my new flat later this month.
The gym at Nanya costs only 180 yuan per session. They may do the heavy lifting for you if you ask.
There are some back-alley gyms and training centers. It will save you tons (money, not weights) if all you want to do is lift weights. Another option is order them online or look at a shop.
The universities may have gyms too.
Yunnan daxue gym has "bare essentials" and costs 50 rmb for 10 visits
Thanks... Can you be more specific on Yunnan daxue gym is? Thanks.
