Elisa - - let me know when and where and love to join y'all. Maybe I'll understand my SONY by then as I use it every day. I have a US Yahoo e-mail address and use an American credit card and have no problem getting/downloading.

Cheers - - JJ

Hi again JJ

I was wondering from where you download paid content. As I read, the partner of Sony is Waterstones, do you use them? Amazon apparently uses its own software for downloads, meaning you could read them only on the Kindle. By the way, is your model the PRS-505 and why did you not go for the touchscreen? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to make a good choice.
Cheers

Howdy Heinz - - I'll answer the ones I can - - I'm still getting used to it. I have PRS-300 and chose it cause I'm more comfortable with push buttons than touch screens (old-fashioned). Sony has a Reader Store (e Book Store) with paid books (thinkl you need a Sony Reader to plug in to access and set up account). I get free books through Google (Google US not Google CN) - - so I have not tried t6o get books fm Amazon - - I also believe you need Kindle to access Amazon. I live in Bei Chen and woulkd be happy to show it to you over a cup of coffee. Cheers - - JJ

Has anyone tried to fix their Ki§ndle in Kunming? Mine has a faulty battery - it leaks energy like hell.

I use the Kindle app on my smartphone and have had no problem. You need to have a US credit card, and the first time I logged in to the store through the Kindle app, I had to go into the settings and switch my location to the US (no VPN needed). Now I can buy and download all I want.

I recently came back with the Nook Tablet. It can read a whole bunch of different formats, and I've hacked it so I can also use the Kindle app and other android apps. I haven't tried to buy anything on their store since I came back, but apparently you can just buy things on their website with your US credit card and then download to your device. My New Yorker subscription has continued to download with no issues.

If you want a Kindle, I would suggest looking around the computer markets. I found someone selling them in Beijing, so you can probably get one here too, or buy it over taobao.

Also, for those using various ereaders, I recommend the free Calibre software for your computer. It allows you to sync and manage ebooks on different devices, and there are some (unsupported) add-ons that allow you to strip the DRM on your ebooks and use them on different devices.

I got my Kindle Touch in early December. It works great!

If you use your Amazon account to buy it, tell them it is a gift and the will send it UNREGISTERED. You need to buy it and send it to someone who will remail it to you. If it is registered and stolen, it has been set to one click pay so a lot of stuff, MP3s, will be downloaded at your expense.

I had a little trouble registering my Touch in KM. I found the touch keypad difficult to use. I went to a restaurant and tried for an hour until a Chinese guy, who had never seen a Kindle, decided to help. He kept touching the touch screen :-)

I have Kindle for PC on two computers as well. Once you buy content you and use it on all your Kindle devices.

I have played around making eBooks for the Kindle. This is pretty easy to do. Key is to use Calibre. I convert from Word .docx to RTF then to MOBI. Calibre handles the conversions well.

I have a kindlefire that I got this Christmas in the US. I set everything up there, registering it with my US address and things. I have had no problems using the wireless on the kindle to order and download new books here in Kunming. They download with no problems, and no extra fees like earlier posters wrote about. I pay just the amount the amazon website says it costs, no extra 2 dollar fee or anything like that.
