research in China

Just to keep you updated (I don´t know if someone of you follows this with interest?), I wrote some mails with the guy from Yunnan Normal University, sadly the University can´t help me, but he tries now to find me a contact in Pu'er, some of the educational office or who is related to the research field. So right know I am really thankful, that he wants to help me, even this isn´t his job. I keep you updated if you want, if there are some "bigger" news!

Good to hear. I also think that (as long as you have the contact), education administration offices may be more interested in that kind of study than any individual schools, and they may also be able to pull more strings toward those schools.

As I recall, on this very forum we have one foreign person whose work in some way relates to education administration in Kunming.

yes, I think so too. But getting in touch with the education administration office is very difficult, as I still don´t have a local contact and therefore only can send emails to the addresses I find online and obviously no one will answer. But maybe the person from the University has some contacts, I still don´t know. Face to face always makes things a bit easier, but I am still not giving up.

So maybe, the foreign person you recall will read this some day!

May I ask, what exactly is the reason for affiliating yourself with a Chinese university other than the visa?
I personally know a PhD who wrote his thesis on a very sensitive topic and did research in Yunnan on a simple language study visa. Perhaps that might be a more viable option?

May I ask how long he stayed in China? Because this is the reason why I would prefer a Chinese University, because I want to stay for one year. Most Visa (the Visa I can apply for) allow me to stay 90 days in China and then I have to leave. But nevertheless I never read anything about a language study visa ...

Language study visas used to be for a year. They are now six months but can be renewed as long as you continue to study.

maybe I´m a bit stupid now, but I can´t find anything to that type of visa?

The only visa which considers fieldwork is the student visa, but for that i need, of course, a chinese university, because i need an admission letter.

So, sorry, I don´t know what visa you mean ...

I think Kurt means you enrol with a private language school and then do your research unofficially so to speak. But since you want to do your research in state school classrooms I doubt this will work. But it is easy to get visas to study Chinese. They're ordinary student visas and many language schools in Kunming can arrange them. It's an option of sorts. Sorry if this doesn't help

Oh, I see! Now I understand. But let me ask one question, if I would consider this option. I would need to take part in this language courses, right? So if I wouldn´t take part in the courses, it wouldn´t work? I know that there are some language schools, but if I would choose one in Kunming and would want to do my research in Pu'er, it wouldn´t work because of the distance.. (I could check if there are some in Pu'er)

I really would like to know how kurtosis handled this. Because you saif your friend did research on a sensitive topic (mine is also very sensitive), so did he have the permission to do the research? Because of the language study visa I would really like to know! So maybe it could be an option, but this few points I really need to clearify first ..

Really would appreciate your answers to them. :)

Attendance is variably enforced but I would advise you NOT to try registering as a student in one place while living elsewhere. That's asking for very serious trouble. Don't know about schools in Puer.
