I agree about speech & responsibility.
Posters, like everyone else, need to learn this, ideally from each other.
I don't see gokunming forums as just another place to play.
I still prefer the simple thumbs down.
Spamming is clearly garbage in my book. Like most advertising.
Perhaps a clear definition of troll, trollers, trolling?
@ishmael
You could define trolling as playing the man and not the ball. Disagreeing with a comment is one thing, a personal attack is crossing the line into troll territory. Which generally provokes a counter reaction and a further devolving into petty arguments that are of no use to anyone. Hence the guideline to not engage with trolls.
And again, unfortunately this learning how to behave has not happened over the years so more active moderation is in order.
Well, 'more action' is vague.
I like your definition of trolling - refusing to bite the bait is almost exactly what I've been advocating, and if this is taken up as responsible practice the occasional troll comment will not be a problem as it will stand out for what it is and can be ignored - an occasional troll comment then serves as what we are, or should be, up against. I think we can handle it - strongly suggest we all do so.
One other comment: neither spam nor trolling, but we can watch relevance/irrelevance of comments - perhaps most posters do this unintentionally once in a while. To be pointed out by other posters themselves. Not a matter of blame or requiring punishment.
One more: humor, satire are not bad things, we don't have to be bores.
@ishmael
More active moderation means that the posting guidelines are no longer mere suggestions but will be enforced, by way of warnings and (temporary) bans. In other words, there are now consequences for repeatedly displaying or amplifying poor online behavior.
OK, that's what I figured. Tread lightly, nobody's perfect, including moderators. Imperfection is not only likely, it's unavoidable. Hence we have intelligent disagreements and are able to learn. Firewalls are made for burning.
Ishmael, remember the lonely nights when you prayed to Zeus in the wee hours, seldom if ever receive response back?
Click back several pages to refresh memory lane of whining.
Yet now you're blessed in almighty dialogue with Rhea, mother of the gods. The Titaness herself has come down from beyond Mt. Olympus, gracing us with her godly presence, gifting us mortals with the promises of new mod(s) and developer to upgrade website design and functionality.
And still, you are discontent. Rambling on about vague and impractical issues to ad nauseam.
How about showing some appreciation and respect for once? Mother of Zeus, your prayers have been answered.
@viyida no ad hominem attacks please. Thank you
I think this particular thread should be left alone. Either that or another thread should be opened where people can blow off their various inane statements and personal/interpersonal problems, while this one might be rededicated to feedback to gokunming - but I think that would all be too much bother, and this thread serves both purposes at present. A matter of leaving well enough alone - otherwise gokunming will have to go on endless time-consuming patrols.
No, there doesn't need to be any other threads for trolls and aholes.
It's very simple.
There are many other social media sites that one can argue, troll, whatever.
@gokunming, IMO, there shouldn't be any more time wasted in responding because everybody gets it, and just about everybody would like the trolls or argumentative people to go away.
Haven't you noticed how much better the site is now??
Just send the violators a warning, then kick them out. Hopefully they do not reincarnate and come back.
There is no point in continuing the back and forth.
You will see that they will act accordingly or will be gone, and the site will be much better for it.
Keep up the good work, love what the site provides for us that live here.
jj, I agree with most of what you said. The site is better for it, and Vera has done a good work.
However, we should allow the new editor to carry out her own vision as she sees fit. If she wants to interact with users directly in a "back and forth" way, as evident above, that's her choice.
Yeah, quite different from Pat's laissez faire approach, and she's purposefully making that known on speakerphone.
As the new captain mentioned in previous page (52), she wants GK under her stewardship to be more of a collaborative community effort involving everyone. Perhaps including herself being in the trenches getting hands dirty initially to set the tone.
I for one appreciate the fact Vera has descended from my metaphorical mountain to be among us. And that was why I took issue with Alien/Ishmael being overly clingy in this village town hall meeting. I was afraid, in worst case scenario, our interim floor general would be dissuaded from engagement and become more aloof. Criminals lurk at first sign Five-O stops patrolling.
