People here are obsessed with conspiracies about paying officials. Some of those schools I've never heard of, but if you thing organisations like New Oriental don't come to Kunming with all their ducks in a row and have to start paying officials to do business then you're poorly informed.
China has changed considerably since those days. Someone will no doubt mention a case, and yes, it happens. When was the last time anyone here had to give a dash to someone to get a visa/ licence/ form etc in their daily life.
Coming from a place where this is the norm I can see that China is a safe distance from the place people paint in their 'crooked officials' rants.

There are 2 members here asking for examples of the many schools closed down - Coconut has NOT posted a reply yet? We are still eagerly awaiting a reply with a few examples since there are over 40 rumored thus far.

I've just seen it mentioned on a few posts now, or implied, that's all. Not picking anyone out specifically as no one person does it on a regular basis.
I've also heard it with the I want to open a business/school I need some guanxi because everything's corrupt - no you don't, you just need the right documents when have to be got through a process that people do all the time.
I need a visa, I can't get one because I don't know one because everything is corrupt - No, you just need the right documents, then you'll get one with no fuss.
I'm having trouble getting X,Y,Z because everything requires paying someone. No, it doesn't it just requires time and patience most of the time.
Now I'll admit, it wasn't said in those words exactly but I've heard in that way thereabouts thought out my years in China.
Just used New Oriental as they are a big publishing house / English school/ Exam centre that have been around since the early 90's so what was mentioned is probably beyond them.
I wouldn't doubt that schools have been closed but I can't see it being one's that would effect anyone here. How many small rooms in towerblocks are there with classrooms in? It'll be them if anyone.
I know that there are lists as long as my arm of those kinds of stories, but my case is that it's being stamped out and it's not on a level that effects Tom, Dick and Harry going about their normal lives.
If it was just a case of passing money upstairs then we wouldn't be discussing the possibility that 40 schools could be closed overnight in a possible crackdown.
I agree, most issues can be resolved by going through proper channels and doing things legally. It is just a matter of time and providing all the docs required.
I do NOT believe a word about this thread as I have heard nothing about 40 schools being closed down for unknown reasons. Still waiting for the facts - examples or a news article. Unfortunately, there is plenty of evidence of clear rules and those who think they can sidestep such rules and do things their own way out of GREED!
