I can't find any pet stores in the listings. I'm thinking of getting a cat or a dog. Maybe a cat.

You can also adopt one: www.gokunming.com/[...]
The bird markets are places that I have seen puppies. But I agree with yankee, if you can, adopt a pet. You also occasionally see adverts on here, 'free to a good home'.
I know some people with a cat they want to get rid of.
Are you still looking for a pet?
My dog recently had pups and I have one left for sale. Male Dachshund, mother fully vaccinated, imported from Russia. Puppy is 8 weeks and house trained. Ready for a new home now!
Do contact me if you are interested. Add my wechat mp_rin for photos or more info.
All the best.
Robin.
If you look for a dog, I have 7 months old Beagle perfectly healthy with her med. book and strick diet ! :)
Remember, pets are a commitment.
Not really worth getting one for a year or two just to feel good about yourself.
Otherwise you'll be back on here trying to give it away when you move on.
If you're in it for the long run then there's animal markets in the back streets off Nanpingjie.
Yes, pets are a commitment and can be taken home if you follow the necessary procedures. Visit your embassy website for info on pet import/export.
If you plan on having a pet for just one or two years, get a hamster or a goldfish. If that's the case I have a hamster cage, food, bedding, toys and accessories for sale.
Good luck with your new pet! : )
Avoid the pet markets. Many of the sellers are unscrupulous puppy-mill dealers. The puppies are bred and raised under horrible conditions, and I've heard many accusations that they pump them full of drugs to make them look healthy when you buy.
I would recommend looking into shelters, talking to vets (who often receive strays), or trying to meet a reputable breeder in person.
Second what Xiefei said. Though some vets actually breed two or three pets in their shops continuously to satisfy their greed. Better look for people who aren't giving pets for the money.
