Forums > Living in Kunming > opening a bank account

I went to the Construction bank today to open an account. Apparently we now need to provide a 'tax number' (along with some other stuff). Any idea what that is or where I find it? as a Brit I'm not aware of ever having a tax number and I'm more than a little reluctant to give my UK National Insurance (NI) number. Some people are telling me that the number is issued by the Chinese government while others say it's my NI number.

I got it done around September/October '18. The office used is 1 junction south of Renmin lu in a courtyard to the right of Nanping jie (sorry, I don't know the name of the road).Turn right at the junction on Nanping Jie then right again at the first right into a courtyard/carpark. You get your fingerprints etc done there then you take everything to the PSB to request the police check (7th floor maybe). The police would only issue the letter for dates where I held a resident permit and the agency wouldn't even start the process unless I could provide a current registration for a Kunming address.

Boild everything is just a waste of nutrients in my opinion and any so-called meal where everithing has the same or very similar flavour is just boring. Of course, this all applies to the common Chinese hotpot and there are exceptions such as Naxi hotpot or Thai hotpot but I don't believe that's what Food God was talking about. As a social event I can't fault hotpot but it rarely leaves me feeling full or satisfied. With that said, I'm not brave/stupid enough to say all this on public TV in a country where the dish IS part of the culture.

If anyone thinks hotpot is like 'leftover dishwater' then they should see some of the soup!

So is the Food God honest or just foolish to say that in public?

So they can now beat policemen along with the poor and anyone not 'connected'. Strange then that they appear frightened to challenge the relatively affluent illegal sellers on Wenhua Xiang. Maybe they're afraid that they might beat the son or daughter of Li Gang...

i went up to the cemetery last week but failed to find the way over to Jiaoye Park (and on to the bamboo temple). any advice? nice ride anyway though...

The only place worth going for a beer in Lijiang. Small place with a super friendly vibe. Great relaxed hangout for locals and travellers alike.

a lovely place to stay with great views of Yulong xueshan (JadeDragon snow mountain) from the roof! Beautifully decorated and hosts that make you feel like family. A million miles better than most other places locally. I can't recommend this place enough.

i thought i'd give this place another try as my usual place was closed today. even though there is now more choice, i was not impressed by the menu. they do have an apparently good range of coffees for up to 80 kuai but even a basic latte is Y26 now. the drinks were OK but nothing special and certainly not worth the money. the place looked somehow cleaner too and was certainly busier! why have so many of the cafes in this area decided that it's fine to raise their prices by so much (in some cases almost double)? i doubt i'll be going back. the 2 stars are because it was just OK and they've obviously made some effort.

not a bad selection of stuff and some of the staff obviously know their way around a bike. however, the 'special' prices for foreigners and the fact that some of the staff will use a big hammer to fix anything keeps me from going back. you could do better.

I won't go there again. The yoghurt is tasty and the curries are usually ok (they seem to vary in quality depending on the day and time). What really annoys me is the fact that they can't comprehend that I order dishes to eat TOGETHER... if my curry arrives 30 minutes after all the other dishes it's not really acceptable. Then again, neither is the 1 hour wait for the rest of the food or the incorrect dishes being sent. By the way, why can't I sit on the 3rd floor until both of the other floors are packed full? Has it never occurred to them that I might want a quiet meal and, after all, I am paying for it!
