I did a turn around visa run at the lao border in mohan a month ago. very smooth, I crossed the border, bought a bottle of whiskey and crossed back. I did not pay to enter Lao. The bus ride from jinghong to the border is 3.5-4 hours each way.

JH to Mohan takes 3 to 3.5 hours
Did this run two weeks ago, at that time a flight to Jinghong was the same price as a bus ticket, so I flew. From JH, there is one direct bus daily to Mohan, it leaves at 920am and returns after 3pm (3:50 maybe) (61rmb each way). The bus station in Mohan is only 1km from the border and yes, you can do a turnaround run. If you miss the one bus, there are many buses between Jinghong, Mengla and Mohan.

I can't speak to the education quality of the school but:
The soccer/football/frisbee field has grass and is fairly well maintained
Getting here on the 84 bus is a snap (from Yunda, Xiaoximen), the gate is right accross the street from the 上马村 bus stop.
My room was part of a suite with polite neighbors in the other rooms. High above the walking mall of Wangfujing, the place is elegant, clean and the location cannot be beat if you are coming to Kunming for travel or business. It was great to have a living room and kitchen and all the amenities of an apartment and the manager speaks English quite-well and was really helpful. The whole experience made me felt like I was home in Kunming, not just traveling. This place is a little more expensive than a hotel, but you get a lot more.

I think it would be cool to have both golf discs and gold discs. I guess I'm just getting excited for the Saturday night party when everything will be gold.
