Forums > Living in Kunming > What the #*%$s wrong with the internet?

4 days and no con to Baidu. Does anyone know if it's been shut down or something? I heard some American companies sued them last week. I can't belive it's my con or computer there is something wrong with, since it's the only one of my regular sites I can't access. Anyone?

Gaoxing eh? How about a career in clapping? As a professional Clapper you'd be responsible for drawing pedestrians' attention to cheapish shops -mainly clothes and shoes. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to really get in touch with your inner annoying child, get plenty of fresh air and exercise your hand and arm muscles at the same time. As an added bonus you can shout and complain all you want while yelling at random people in English, since they won't be able to understand you anyway. What's not to like?

Forums > Living in Kunming > Cars don't need to stop at this intersection?

I went to a policestation right next to one of those T-intersections Tigertiger talks about yesterday. I was furious that the cars didn't at least slow down for pedestrians crossing for green, and mentioned this to the police officers. They said flat out that it's legal for cars to drive through the red light in these cases. When I mentioned that the Chinese traffic laws require cars to slow down and stop at a zebra crossing they gave me the "Mjeh, what to do?!" look.

I absolutely agree with RayinKM: When spending time in Chinese traffic you should assume that everyone else is a selfish, inconsiderate bastard with no clue about the laws, safety and curteous driving.

I get why many policeofficers won't make statements due to ongoing investigations coz "Xing was healthy before going into the interrogation waiting room. He went through some emotional changes during the interrogation, but no torture was used." sure sounds fishy.

That said the more time I spend in China the less compassion I am willing to extend to thieves.

I honestly don't get why it seems to be so important for people to have a car. I assume there is some face and a little showoff-iness in it around here, but then again isn't there everywhere? Whenever my gf hints of the idea of buying a car I always say that if she can find more good reasons to do it than I can NOT to I'll go ahead and buy one. It's not even close.

-Expensive, polluting, dangerous, crashes (not the dangerous kind but the fender bender kind you see all the time), gasoline prices, theft risk, parking lot price, parking fees, lack of parking space, carvalue plummet, not to mention the traffic jams happening everywhere. Oh,, not to forget that you can take a taxi to and from work the 15-20 times a month you need to and it will still be much cheaper than buying a car and paying what is needed to keep it running.

Went there yesterday and it totally made my week. Nice decor and friendly staff and a real salad bar. Sadly we both wanted mexican food so I can't really say much about their other courses. The food was great but just a tad spicier would have improved the dish. The best thing was that we almost had the place to ourselves and we could have a quiet conversation without shouting, spitting Chinese people in the background. I realised how much I had missed that since coming here.

We went to Chicago Coffee a couple of days ago and it was a nice experience. The place is cozy with soft comfy chairs (I realized how much I have missed one since coming here) and they have a nice little collection of English language books in the corner consisting mainly of classics and travel litterature. I was looking forward to trying their advertized tortilla bar but it wasn't up and running that evening.

Instead we went for 2 12 inch pizzas -roast chicken and pepperoni- but we quickly realized that 1 would have been enough. Those things are heavy. I am mainly into Italian style pizza but Chicago's double layered pizzas are well worth a try. Their coffee seems to be a bit on the expensive side but people say good things about it and they have got a nice selection. I wouldn't mind dropping by again some day,, hopefully when they've got the tortilla thing going. English speaking staff btw.
