Are there many white-skinned foreigners in Kunming who don't speak some English? How are the children to tell? For me, it's their school at fault, not the kids themselves.
I have met a few non english speakers.
And Kunming is a Turistic place with many white visitors walking around... it is really rude to link white skinned foreigners with english.
Well, maybe not Really rude. Most of the times i don´t really care.
But sometimes feels like being part of something that some of us are not.
I don't see how it's rude - most 'white-skinned foreigners' in Kunming speak pretty good English, whether or not it is their mother tongue. It is important, however, to communicate the idea (which is largely the result of the fact that most foreigners who travel here can speak English) that English is the language of non-Asian (at least) foreigners.
Anyway, back to the point: if you don't want to get into conversations with the kids, don't growl at them but be nice - the expat growl would only reinforce the xenophobia they may be getting from history and culture through their parents, teachers, etc. - i.e., they don't have to carry cultural baggage that is no longer appropriate (if it ever was).
Yes, sorry for being off topic. Just to make my point clear i will en up briefly.
I think that choosing a language based on the skin color is not the best way to start a conversation. I would start using the local language and then if there is no understanding between the individuals... look for another language..
Could you imagine in San Francisco saying 你好 to an asian looking person? definately that's a racial stereotype.
Talking to a foreigner in english feels like they don't help in our integration. That's all i wanted to say.
Sorry to be off topic.
According to the topic. It is funny how they go to the FRENCH coffe to find someone speaking english. LOL
White guys just can't stop turning everything into a racial issue and playing the victim, can they?
What am I seriously doing here...
It's not American style racism. It's naivety. And it is annoying enough that we have the right to complain about it. Yeah, maybe you got annoyed with the nonsense English conversations too, yankee00, but they aren't going up to every Asian for a picture and signature. It's not us "playing the victim", we should be able to go study or work in French cafe or Salvador's without being interrupted 5 times in a sitting.
@inthelivinfor - If the kids go to a place where foreigners congregate, speaking English, eating western food, it probably doesn't seem like they're not really trying to "integrate" to begin with, so how can you blame the kids? Not saying there's anything wrong with that or open up the "foreigners should be more Chinese" debate, but maybe the kids/parents/teachers just don't think if the fact that it can be a disturbance and just figure you'll find it refreshing to speak English in China. In any case, sounds like it's annoying and presumptuous of them, but an innocent mistake.
I wonder if I went into Chinatown back home to practice my mandarin how that would be received? Serious question - I think well, but I don't really know.
Edit: "...probably doesn't seem like they're trying to..."
Can't type that much on a smartphone without fucking something up.
