What a charming ad, sounds like just the sort of place I'd like to send my kids. Actually I'm quite surprised the mods are OK with this, given their penchant for editing, deleting, and disappearing comments...

Didn't you know that in China, professional qualification is measured by how someone looks? Didn't you hear of that story where a girl who graduated from a top Chinese university had a tough time finding a job, and after she had facial surgery, she became overwhelmed by the amount of job offers?

That ad could have been worse:

""High-standing school is looking for a parttime English teacher to teach children aged 3-8.native english-speaking countries, white skin only, not oversized butt;"

Completely agree with yankee. But isn't that way so many unqualified laowai are here? to get an easy job? If I had a school I would rather hire ABC or CBC to teach small kids. They are totally bilingual, perfect english pronunciation, usually able to directly deal with parents. That's also true that those guys usually don't take such crap jobs and those schools are more like kindergarten for lazy parents looking for more free time...

I think *we, as Americans, have lived such a sheltered life that we take certain things for granted and are genuinely surprised by what we encounter when we step outside the bubble that is the United States.

While being the only economic and military superpower in the world has it's perks, knowing how the world works isn't one of them. What we perceive as normal behavior is actually abnormal on a global scale. We think we are the mainstream culture when in fact we are counter-mainstream.

What is objectively wrong with the ad? If I'm looking for basketball players would it be wrong to advertise "we will only considered applicants over 6'"? If I'm looking for a linebacker or sumo wrestler would it be wrong to ask for someone over 300lb?

This is the market in China, Chinese parents in general are not very sophisticated. When they see a foreign teacher then they assume falsely that anything "made" abroad must be of superior quality. Until the market changes the the suppliers, i.e. language schools, have no choice but to supply what the market demands if they wish to stay in business.

Now, is this a sad commentary on the state of Chinese society? Perhaps. But to all those that subscribe to the conservative party and their battles cries against socialism, this IS what capitalism and free market looks like. We (the laborers) are merely suppliers of excess labor looking for a buyer, we are not human beings with feelings or inherent value. The value of our life is only based on how much we can sell our labor. People with no marketable skills are like Nokias and Blackberries, destined to be valueless and tossed aside for the new sexier iPhones.

If one does not take a global view and understand what the "real world" looks like, especially after having traveled outside the bubble, then it's no wonder why so many countries, including many European countries, despises the US as it try to impose their "superior" view on others. Maybe this is why the Middle-East and perhaps China always view any actions on the part of the American government with suspicion.

Food for thought....

Peace~!

Being six foot tall basketball player or a 300lb sumo wrestler are completely differrent demands than having white skin to teach English. To teach English, you need the qualification, skill and experience. Why do Black teachers who meet those demands have to be paid less than Whites because of the way they look? By agreeing with this absurd belief from Chinese parents, you are only encouraging and enforcing their ignorance and naivety. If you are a teacher, you are supposed to help educate people, not keep them in ignorance

It is what it is. I know it is upsetting at times especially if you are on the receiving end. It's just how it is here and there is very little you can do to change that at present. In time maybe it will happen.

In China the ad is acceptable. If the ad were placed in the States, the school would be put out of business and sued.

tony, I think you have a strange idea about what capitalism is.
Capitalism was born in England during the Industrial Revolution but after that moment many steps have been made to ensure the rights of workers, basically because the government realized that free market created social injustices that affected the stability of the society itself. From that moment, employees were not considered just "cheap labour" as you are suggesting but they had right to work a limited amount of hours under safe conditions, to get paid reasonably and, especially, to not be discriminated by their skin colour, race, sexual orientation and so on.
People struggled and lost life for this, trying to get better conditions for the future generations. Social injustices are still on but for sure those are achievements that cannot be denied.
I understand that China haven't experienced this phase of history yet but It will arrive of course. And I guess things may change afterwards.
