That would certainly be more interesting topic to discuss than just learning a language, grammar, vocab, conjugation, etc.
Like a latin language discussion group. You could add common/lesser known parts of the language we use everyday. I used to love deciphering biological and medical terms.
e.g. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy BSE (mad cow disease).
Crudely translated, bovine (cow) spongiform (formed like a sponge lots of holes) encephalopathy (brain malfunction).
and words like lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) sound way cool.
@Dazzer
Exactly, it was exciting when I realised that Latin words (also, English words with Latin origins) can also be dissected into different parts - not unlike Chinese words - while each of said parts contributes to the meaning of the word as a whole... and not just composite words, either.
Example:
Antepenult: ante (before) + pen (paene: almost) + ult (ultimus/ultima: last) = the syllable before the "almost last", therefore the third-from-last syllable.
Salve! Just wondering if this group is still going? Ive studied Latin at high school and uni and love it (I did a classics major) :) I'm coming to Kunming late July for a couple of months- should I bring my Latin text books? :) thanks
@SJayne
Yes, the group is still going strong. Feel free to bring your favourite Latin book and showcase your Latin flair!
Please keep an eye on the thread for info about our next meeting.
Take care. ;-)
