From student visa to business visa...

Hi, I am a bit confused now...
Is it possible to change from a student-visa to a business-visa, without leaving Kunming?

I get mixed information and the more I read the more blurred it gets!
Anybody have the experience or...?

Thanks for the help! :)

No.
There may be agents in HK who can frig the system but it is illegal.

Do you want it for work or biz.

A business visa is not for working. That is illegal. This is one of the loopholes that was closed in 2008. It lead to a major increase in in tax revenues from expats for the Chinese taxman.

A business visa allows you to visit China to do business. This requires that you work for a non-Chinese company and get sent here on biz. You should be paid outside China as well.

You will need a letter from a local company, to your employer, inviting you over on business. This letter also needs to be stamped by the local govt office dealing with business. This letter, and other paperwork, must be submitted to the Chinese visa office in your home country, I don't think you can do it in a third party country.

Hello everyone, I up this post since my question is related :

I am currently living in kunming under a student resident permit( that will expire at the end of july) and I have started working for a chinese company since my graduation. This company is trying to provide me a work visa but is it possible to obtain this work visa without living the country?

To be clear my question is : can I transform my student resident permit into a work visa in kunming? or is a trip to HK compulsory?

Thank you in advance!

PS : I know I should not be working for the moment since I am still under a student resident permit, I know the risks I am taking.

What you said about the business Visa is not completely accurate, the busines visa is not only for business it has a range of purposes, exhibitions, business starting up a company, research, etc.

And you only need to go through all that business paperwork if you are here on business for an expat company. Plus it is not illegal to get it set up in HK through an agent, well most agents, I got it in HK and the only thing it saved me was time. I had to get all the documents you would need being in your home country.
Plus half of the Work Visas here are illegal, since only very few comapanies are allowed to (100%legal=no guanxi permits) get the Z Visas.

About the work visa, it was possible to get it in kunming prior to July 1st, before the whole Visa regulation thingy changed again. A friend of mine did it last year. But if it is still possible, I can't say. Although somebody here should know, I assume.

Briefly, Your Chinese company can most likely get you a work visa. The Chinese company must meet certain requirements to get you a work permit. Like, no Chinese person available who can do your job. Previously in another forum I have decribed the general process at least as it was up to July1 with more changes coming. You normally would have leave the country to obtain a Z visa at the Chinese consulate of your choice with in a certain period of time.
