My father-in-law lives in Kunming with his Chinese wife. He needs daily care with the basics - someone to help him get dressed, get up and get around, take him out for a short walk or out in his wheelchair, take him out for meals or cook a simple meal, etc. His wife is much younger, but has health problems of her own and doing all this every day with no help is getting to be too much. There are no other family members here willing to help. I'm visiting from the U.S. and trying to understand what the options are, which is difficult since I don't speak the language. Is it possible to hire people to come in and provide in-home elder care? My father-in-law's wife says most people for hire only want to take care of babies or children, they don't want to care for the elderly. Are there such things as elder day care or nursing homes in Kunming? I've searched online but can't really find much. I have a feeling that these are still western concepts.
I don't know where to find them but they must exist. A year ago I was in the hospital here in Kunming. I was sharing a room with an elderly gentleman who had a 24 hour helper for those 'basics' you talked about. I don't know, though, if he worked for the hospital or an agency. Perhaps the hospitals have some connections to agencies that you could investigate.
After reading your post above, I did a quick search and found a site that may be what you are looking for in Kunming. It is in English!!!
nursingcare.cn/english/wd_03.html
Hope it helps.
you could also consider hiring a male "nanny" to help your Father in Law, this seems quite commen in Kunming, lifting in and pushing wheel chairs etc.
You can look in those BaoMu companies. Ask your Fathers wife to run an ad in a site like 58, for example.
km.58.com/[...]
Thank you all for all the ideas and information, that's great, I really appreciate it! The 24 hour helpers or BaoMu companies sound interesting. I think the day care place is across town from him, but worth looking into since some socializing would be good. If you think of anything else, please let me know!
I am a kunming girl, i graduated last June, i want to help you to take good care of your father and mother . send the message to [email protected]
Be careful of baomu or ayi agencies ESPECIALLY if you're not around to manage. For assisted care best to ask hospitals for referrals. that way if they screw up the blacklisting actually might mean something.
or you can interview lijinqin...
Before you hiring a "daddysitter", I think it's necessary to make sure that your father-in-law is really in need of this help and meanwhile he is willing to accept this. I mean espercially the would-be "nanny" is a chinese, who does not speak English and do know muck about your father-in-law's nature and his daily routine. Anyway, letting the potential employee get the picture of this is something you have consider. And i wanna tell you local people in kunming are kind and warm-hearted.so. good luck.
