Shaxi my dream

okly78 (19 posts) • 0

Hi,

I've fallen in love with Shaxi.
I wish i can stay there for good. Living in city, life is just occupied with endless work. My life has been kidnapped by work.

I was so in love with the slow pace relaxing life in Shaxi. Enjoying the morning breakfast in the outdoor with warm sunbathe.

How can i move to Shaxi and stay at there, finding a place to stay and earn a small living.

Anyone has experience in this :)

Enjoy it while you can because since the new highway opened between Dali and Lijiang last year, more and more tourists are not stopping at Jianchuan and Shaxi.

Renting should be inexpensive but work will be difficult unless you are willing to work on your own and get your own students.

Hi all,
Thanks for the reply.
Starting own business is a good option. It is either inn or small cafe :)

I'm good in computer, can I run a small IT training school there and recruit some students hmmm:)
In a village like shaxi ?hmmmm:)

Shaxi already is beginning to look like Lijiang with all the cafes (that are empty all day) at the town square. Keep in mind that the residents of Shaxi are farmers and do not have money and they are probably not too keen on learning english or IT. The 6 cafes I saw a few months ago only get customers from the tourists (still few) and not from any of the locals. I doubt you can get any students who will pay you 50 Yuan per hour there.

Right behind the town square they were building a very nice and expensive guesthouse, so unless you have a few million to spare, I do not think you can compete with them when they are finished.

Hi HFCAMPO,

Yes, i was there 1 months plus ago. Shaxi get real quiet after 5pm, cafes are mostly empty with no customers.

I saw some construction going on there, what a pity to destroy those old wooden houses and rebuild new guesthouse. It is really a shame.

I cant imagine KFC, Pizzahut, MacDonalds open there in 10 years time....what they did to Lijiang...will this day come????!

If you like Shaxi then you will also love Heijing in Lufeng County in Chuxiong.

I was going to buy small house there a few years ago but was unable to do so but you can rent very cheaply (150/month or 1200-1500/year) and they need english teachers at the middle school. You can work at the school and also for yourself in the evenings but do not expect to get rich. You can probably get 25/50 Yuan/hour.

You should visit by bus or train and have a look for yourself. I think it can provide more opportunities than Shaxi.

Heijing? Cool, i will take a look.

Btw, i spent 9 days staying in shaxi.
Exploring villages nearby, it was very nice experience. Local people is nice and friendly. I made some chinese friends there too, going back again in this early april :)

here's another suggestion:

start a business in shanghai where people have deep pockets.

and take 3 months off each year to stay in shaxi.

This is essentially what I am doing. I work at a primary school in East China (where the money is), and spend 3 months of the year in Yunnan. If you do this for 10 years and save your money you can then basically retire to some small town in Yunnan and not worry so much about working...maybe just taking odd jobs now and then to pay for your food and utilities.
