Forums > Living in Kunming > Do you feel threatened and frightened in Kunming?

Kunming certainly does not feel like a threatening place, in terms of imminent violence, but it doesn't feel like a tremendously welcoming place either.

Since I came here recently I've had a few too many aggressive stares and people calling things out as I walk down the road.

But then I've also had kids shout out "wow!" (kinda cute) and people come up to me in shops and try and be my friend, so it's a mixed bag.

I wouldn't dream of walking round downtown Jo'burg, Mumbai or Sri Lanka, but I'd walk down darkish streets here without *too* much trepidation.

@alex just some reviews on trip advisor... Might give it a go then, I'd imagined it was like the Ozzie outback bars you get in London.

The new 吗哪 is on Fengzhu St, just opposite the dry cleaners. I can't compare it with the old one as I haven't been, but the food was delicious, and judging by the photos, the decor is a bit more upmarket too.

Gotta be honest, reports of rowdy ex- pats have put me off going to salvadors. Since I arrived 10 days ago had the stares, phlegm etc, sniggers from bored teens etc.. But also had an amazing free meal at the new heavenly mana opened up just off dongcheng xi lu, and today a chinese English teacher invited me to look round her school and offer to help me with my chinese, so all in all really impressed by Chinese hospitality so far...
