What's wrong in having some guys busking, begging or just trying to live differently ? That happens everywhere in the world, why should not happen here?

And what about this hate against cheap backpackers? I think there are more serious problem in this world than this, don't you think?
Please guys, that used to be an interesting forum section with interesting articles.... but yes, it is true that "Les vieillards aiment à donner de bons préceptes, pour se consoler de n'être plus en état de donner de mauvais exemples"....

@alien: That is an interesting analysis but I think the people who drinks and not only smell the coffee are really few and I would say that they don't really belong to the current main stream of backpacking.
Backpackers now lost a lot of the mystery they had when they were mostly outsiders not satisfied about the "get a degree-get a job-get a family- get a house- get a car " model, people who were just looking for something they themselves didn't know yet. Now it's almost ust fashion, itinerary traced by the lonely planet bible, a lot of pictures and beer, mostly zero curiosity, the biggest adventure to dream is the flight of the gibbons somewhere in south east asia...

Some dorms in km might be cheap (about 30kuai) but they allow only chinese people in, they probably don't fit chinese rules about accomodation for foreigners.
About the original question I think the answer is very easy: hiking shoes are big and it's easier to wear them than keep them in the pack.
Anyway I think backpacking now has lost a lot of the original philosophy, that was travelling the world on budget. Backpackers usually move around the only places that lonely planet sponsors and finally they became tourist traps and for sure not the cheapest places to be. If you travel in Laos in Luang Namtha or Luang Prabang you will be constantly overcharged, prices are so higher than what locals pay.

Is it backpacking still meaningful now or is it just fashion?

@ fixit the best way to burn a potential talented player is to let him play in the wrong position. the coach is the one who has the experience to choose the best position for everyone in the team. imagine every player having the authority to decide where and when to play, do you think that would be the most effective way? everybody is a genius at something but nobody is a genius at everything.

@fixit a good teacher is like a good father, he guides the student and let him find his way. every kid has some ability and lacks others, failing is also a way to let the student focus on something he is better at. imagine you are a football coach, a player is good in defense but he dreams to be a top striker, what kind of training would you design for him? the good world is the one where everybody can give his contribution according to his skill/ability, everyone is a genius at something.

i dont think it s bad planning, there are so many people in china that every new hub is welcome. think about spring festival where everything is congested. guilin kunming also can help tourism. by subway in 45 minutes passengers can get to nan pin jie, not bad.

This article is not reporting what really happened. The tourists signed a contract where they bought a "1 renminbi tour" including food, accomodation and visit to dali, lijiang, sichuanbanna and other destinations but the package required to spend from 3000 to 4000 yuan in shopping. Once in the locations the tourists refused to buy goods, on the bus the tour guide insulted them (she gets payed according to the money tourists spend in shopping) and one passenger took a video of her delivering it to the media.
Just an abuse case from multiple sides...
