I believe Metro tightened their regulations recently although if you have work here there is a very good chance your company has a metro card already and you can use their number to get in and pay (play the semi-retarded laowai if troubled, most of us have a natural ability to pull it off). I lived the past two years in an area north of Beichen and it was pretty good. New apartment blocks and much lower prices than in down town KM. The flip side is the insane congestion but with the metro system starting up next year it's going to be easier to live in the outlying areas. I've spent 3 years in Kunming and I've never heard of foreigners only buildings with unrestricted TV and internet. Can you elaborate?

Wonder why several of those links seem to be banned. Are local weather forecasts sensible information during peace time these days? Somebody ought to take a good hard look at the gfw.

Tengchong it is. You don't happen to have the shop's name, phone number or website do you? If they are reputable I don't mind paying a little bit more than cheapest-price-off-Taobao. Can you recommend a named set to ask for? R15, Razr or something?

Again with the avocados. Does anyone know why they are so abundant and cheap in Yunnan's bordering countries but so incredibly rare -and expensive- here? I miss them so,, :(

Nice article. I wish I had the courage to try this stuff out. Maybe after a bottle of baijiu or two. Second the Yunnan recipes. Some of those dishes became my favourite Chinese foods and I'd love to get more ideas. Maybe GoKunming could find another local who's into the Yunnan kitchen who could pick up the torch?

Went there yesterday and it totally made my week. Nice decor and friendly staff and a real salad bar. Sadly we both wanted mexican food so I can't really say much about their other courses. The food was great but just a tad spicier would have improved the dish. The best thing was that we almost had the place to ourselves and we could have a quiet conversation without shouting, spitting Chinese people in the background. I realised how much I had missed that since coming here.

We went to Chicago Coffee a couple of days ago and it was a nice experience. The place is cozy with soft comfy chairs (I realized how much I have missed one since coming here) and they have a nice little collection of English language books in the corner consisting mainly of classics and travel litterature. I was looking forward to trying their advertized tortilla bar but it wasn't up and running that evening.

Instead we went for 2 12 inch pizzas -roast chicken and pepperoni- but we quickly realized that 1 would have been enough. Those things are heavy. I am mainly into Italian style pizza but Chicago's double layered pizzas are well worth a try. Their coffee seems to be a bit on the expensive side but people say good things about it and they have got a nice selection. I wouldn't mind dropping by again some day,, hopefully when they've got the tortilla thing going. English speaking staff btw.
