Au contraire mon gun-slinging, bull-riding, chilli-munching pal. I've decided to stay for another year, imposing my values on the 1.350.000.000 Chinese one bumpkin at a time. The day I STOP getting offended/horrified/flabbergasted/baffled/annoyed is the day I'm out of here.

Doubt you'd go to jail for letting air out of a tire, especially if no one is around to see it. I dunno,, I'm getting seriously sick and tired of this kind of antisocial behaviour that so many Chinese people seem so eager to engage in.

Maybe I'm just having yet another bad China day but I'm getting increasingly xxxxxx off because of this: I live in a gated community up north. Apparently some guy's had a dispute with the security about parking within the area so he decided the best way to get back at them was to park his car in the gate so no other cars can enter. He's been parked there for 3 days now, security can't do anything and from what I've heard the police didn't want to get involved. This guy is clearly a major douche bag taking his beef out on everyone else living in the area and I'm thinking about doing something about it. Sure, there are other gates but they're far from the parking spots and it takes some careful navigating through the park where little kids play. What do you guys think is the proper way to go about this?:

1. Do nothing.
2. Let the air out of his tires.
3. Deposit some rotten trash over his car.
4. Use his car for batting practice.
5. Find out his number, write it on cardboard and place it under his wipers.

I also thought about writing something else on cardboard "Free car. I'm sick of it. Yours if you can find a way to remove it" but I'm afraid it might get me into trouble of someone actually did.

Another reason to keep it above 150 is that occasionally they'll cancel on you and there is no compensation for that. I've even tried sitting an hour in a bus just to find no one home. The mother had forgotten there was a class that day. Smoke turned to fire when my wife told me I couldn't charge for the class even though I had done everything right, it's just not the Chinese way.

Some idiots are building down from my flat as well. The developer doesn't give a rat's ass that he is surrounded on all 4 sides by residential high rises and used to work all through the night -correction, whipping his 1500 a month migrant workers around. After having received a couple of hundred complaints over half a year he finally caved, although he apparently thinks that giant earth movers and a steady stream of huge yellow trucks aren't included in the No-working-after-midnight clause. Having slept 3 hours last night I am sorely tempted to go and introduce Mr. Developer to my friend Mr. Baseball Bat.

"A man claiming to be an official from Sichuan warned Kunming that it was hindering its development by discouraging prostitution. He then punched a reporter." Sure sounds like an official to me.

If I had a shop there and had to pay spiraling rent, tax and salaries I would be furious that the authorities allowed this to go on, and I (having a building site right down from my window myself) can easily understand why the residents feel annoyed by the noise and commotion. On the other hand one can also understand why someone would want to supplement a 2-3000 yuan a month income, especially with the kind of inflation we are experiencing at the present. Not an easy situation to deal with but hopefully the local government will one day realize that tearing down all the markets in order to build an excessive amount of high rises might not be such a good idea in the long run.

Went there yesterday and it totally made my week. Nice decor and friendly staff and a real salad bar. Sadly we both wanted mexican food so I can't really say much about their other courses. The food was great but just a tad spicier would have improved the dish. The best thing was that we almost had the place to ourselves and we could have a quiet conversation without shouting, spitting Chinese people in the background. I realised how much I had missed that since coming here.

We went to Chicago Coffee a couple of days ago and it was a nice experience. The place is cozy with soft comfy chairs (I realized how much I have missed one since coming here) and they have a nice little collection of English language books in the corner consisting mainly of classics and travel litterature. I was looking forward to trying their advertized tortilla bar but it wasn't up and running that evening.

Instead we went for 2 12 inch pizzas -roast chicken and pepperoni- but we quickly realized that 1 would have been enough. Those things are heavy. I am mainly into Italian style pizza but Chicago's double layered pizzas are well worth a try. Their coffee seems to be a bit on the expensive side but people say good things about it and they have got a nice selection. I wouldn't mind dropping by again some day,, hopefully when they've got the tortilla thing going. English speaking staff btw.
