The World Agroforestry Centre (also known by its previous acronym, ICRAF) has operated in China since 2004 through the Centre for Mountain Ecosystem Studies, located in the Kunming Institute of Botany campus in the north of the city.
The Kunming office is the hub of ICRAF’s East and Central Asia regional program, which also maintains offices in Beijing and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
The World Agroforestry Centre is a centre of scientific excellence that harnesses the benefits of trees for people and the environment. Leveraging the world’s largest repository of agroforestry science and information, we develop knowledge practices from farmers’ fields to the global sphere to ensure food security and environmental sustainability.
The East and Central Asia office is currently engaged in a variety of projects including large-scale research into agricultural innovation in Honghe County, Yunnan; training rural communities in the Mekong region in mushroom identification and cultivation; recalibrating traditional Ecological Calendars in the Pamir mountains to boost adaptive capacity in the face of climate change; and Sino-African cooperation on sustainable cultivation of the multipurpose Calotropis plant.
Our Kunming office is a multicultural environment: Researchers, students and staff from a dozen countries may be working or visiting the office at any one time.
We welcome enquiries from those interested in our work, or from anyone interested in working, studying or pursuing an internship with us.
The Centre employs a range of people with backgrounds in different disciplines, including biological sciences, geographic and statistical modeling, media and communications, social sciences, project management and administration.
