@Alien
Oversight & Overhead - dunno.
FOREIGN THINGS - dunno. Up to Stef to decide what "foreign things" she wants to present. Is the goal to entertain, educated, inspire? Let your goal be your guide...and see if that jives with what the administrators can accept.
Also - this would be a potentially fantastic article and photo opportunity for gokm...(hint hint hint).
In my home country it is common for university students to sort of "adopt" kids from an orphanage. A student meets with a kid maybe once a week, just to hang out, help with homework, go somewhere for a walk, to the cinema etc. Basically is like being an older sister/brother to that one child. As I've decided to stay in KM for few more years I've been wondering if it is possible to do the same in China. If you have any info, let me know :)
I need to do some volunteer work placements for an online course I am studying. I have attempted to find/contact some of the organisations mentioned and even pm'ed some posters in this thread..... but I haven't had any luck.
I am free throughout the week and happy to volunteer my time for any local group/NGO etc. I am a qualified teacher but am happy to work in any capacity where I can be of use. If you know of anything, please pm me.
Thanks in advance ! :)
@disco: OK, but be choosy about what you volunteer to do - obviously the value of what you do depends on...what you do. If you want to volunteer some money I know some people who could see that it gets used to good effect (in education) in areas where sending kids to school presents a certain amount of hardship on parents.
if you click on Forums above, then type 'volunteer' or 'volunteering' in the search engine, you'll find many threads about the topic (although most may be dated).

be choosey as alien says. stuffing envelopes may not get you what youneed for your course
@disco cindo
You may want to investigate the city orphanage on the edge of town. Wide range of children's ages - just make sure you negotiate a letter (which you'll have to have translated) stating hours, duties, etc.
Probably lots of openings for volunteer teachers - even english teachers - super simple english. Bring a bilingual friend to help you set-up your non-paying relationship - you might be able to swing a free lunch out of the deal - eating with the kids or faculty...so time your class(es) appropriately and conveniently (or not).
Thanks guys, @Magnifico - yep have trawled the forums to find most websites and orgs mentioned no longer up and running or not really relevant. I need something here in town rather than rural.
@Alien I do have to do tasks and assignments related to the volunteering, so just donating money isn't what I'm looking for.
I might follow @laotou's advice and get a letter drafted in Chinese by someone and do a bit of a mail out.
Thanks :)
@disco: OK, but it's also perhaps interesting to think what the value of the results of your volunteering may be (hey, I'm not saying money solves all problems, I just want to point out that among the poor, money is one thing that is always lacking). I hope volunteering is not just a matter of jumping through a required academic hoop, which only benefits the hoop-jumper. Perhaps. The real world is actually out there.)
At any rate, I sincerely hope that what you find to do will be useful to all concerned, as it really is possible for this to happen.
Of course, I am not so naive to think my help would be more sought after than a wad of cash! However, i do indeed need to jump through these academic hoops to complete the practical component of the course. :/ As mentioned, i have to complete course work associated with my "volunteer experience" .
However as you said, I would actually like to think I could do something positive and meaningful for an organisation... or am I being too idealistic?
